James Anderson sustained a rib injury on the final day of the second test match which was played at Newlands. He was able to bowl eight overs only on the final day. Anderson felt tightness in the left side of the rib cage before he stopped bowling. Although, ECB said that it was a minor issue but later, MRI scans showed that the injury was not minor. He will miss the remaining two tests and will be flying back home.

Anderson starred in the first innings of the Newlands test as he took a five wicket haul and was impressive in the second innings as well. He had been on the sidelines because of a calf injury which he suffered in the Ashes. Anderson said in a tweet that he is frustrated to be not able to play but he will be supporting the boys from home.

England have plenty of options who could replace James Anderson for the remaining two test which include, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer, Craig Overton and Chris Woakes. However, Jofra Archer looks to be a likely replacement for the veteran.

Anderson is 37 years old which means that his body is prone to injuries. If he wants to play more cricket, he has to work really hard on his fitness.
