Mike Peake Enters the Transfer Portal

Mike Peake enters the transfer portal to put Georgia at the 13 scholarship limit.

After one season at UGA, Mike Peake will be exiting the program. The loss of Peake means that Crean will only have four remaining players from the Class of 2020. Many will think he was recruited over or it is a typical case of "Spring Creaning", which is a humorous and derisive reference to Tom Crean oversigning every offseason. However, there was uncertainty and some understandable discontent with playing time.

The rising Sophomore from Chicago expressed his uncertainty as far as his future was concerned on Snapchat 3 1/2 weeks ago. Peake signed with Georgia on August 5, 2019, he was a late signee for the Class of 2020.

Both Mike Peake and Rodney Howard were Spring/Summer signees and were hoped to fortify the UGA frontcourt. Both ended up not playing as much time as they hoped and in the case of Howard, he transferred to Georgia Tech.

Mike Peake showed great potential.

Peake did not play every game and his playing time was limited. However, he showed that he could be a strong defensive rebounder and be extremely efficient in the restricted arc. Peake was a good Free Throw shooter and showed a level of competency inside the perimeter. Peake's three point shooting needs work as he was too often wildly off in terms of his accuracy. Peake was a tweener at Georgia without any clear offensive or defensive directive, but he did show an ability to score on second chance opportunities.

Peake closed out his season with likely his best performance of the season against Ole Miss.

Peake will have an opportunity to grow elsewhere and while it is tough to see him go, he's obviously doing what is best for him. Removing uncertainty and giving himself an opportunity to play a larger, more consistent role immediately will be his objective. He should be able to find such an opportunity. Possibly at DePaul or Purdue.
