Redemption for Liverpool; Epic Fail for Ajax - Champions League Groups Stage Final Standings

Last night, final group stage matches were played in Champions League groups E, F, G and H. The results of these matches come with mixed feelings as some teams who had huge chances of qualification to the round of 16 lost the opportunity, eventually getting relegated to Europa league group stages.

Liverpool, who only needed a draw with Red Bull Salzburg, traveled all the way to secure a 2-0 win over their hosts, putting Liverpool at the top of group E. Napoli needed a win over Genk to be on the safe side, and they did not fail in securing this win. They hosted and overpowered Genk to a 4-0 win, finishing as second in the group.

Barcelona already secured a place in the next round before their last group match, yet they denied Inter Milan a spot when they defeated them 2-1. Dortmund however hosted Slavia Praha and got their needed win to finish second in the group and secure a spot in the round of 16.

A 2-2 result from the RB Leipzig vs Lyon match was enough to see them both to the next round while Benfica's 3-0 win over Zenit only gives them a spot in the Europa League.

All Ajax needed to qualify was a draw against Valencia. Considering that they were to play at home, that draw felt like an easy task. It eventually ended as a lost battle as Valencia snatched the opportunity from them, beating Ajax by a lone goal. Chelsea also had a 2-1 victory over Lille, giving them the second spot from group H in the round of 16.

Other matches will be played tonight to complete the group stage matches in all groups. With only two spots remaining to fight for, some teams have nothing to lose in their matches while others have everything to play for. PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Tottenham, Manchester City and Juventus already secured spots in the next round.
