I miss hockey

This shot from earlier this year has me longing for the rink again. It has been since this awesome game that I have not been on the ice.

Presently I am enjoying the hell out of an NHL season a month or 2 old. The summer I’m is extra long for hockey watching hosers and starts the day their team bows out of the playoffs. Then it is 3-4 months of tough sledding. Watching my favourite team every 2 or 3 nights is sweet.

Still, I miss the ice.

It used to be twice a week. Monday nights for 2 of the best hours of the week on an outdoor rink with all the boys and girls. Then it was a game on the weekend for some league play against the same people we have played for 10 years or more. Drinks and trash talk afterward.

Then, once a year, it is on. A weekend of hockey and live music with folks I see once a year. I look forward to that weekend again and we have already been discussing how to follow up last year’s performance. Can’t wait.

BUT! I need some ice time. I am still active and train a couple times a week so I will be relatively in shape. Not hockey shape though. The lungs are not ready for those intense sprints. The ankles not quite tight enough to jump around on those blades. It is rather crazy to prop a human up 3 inches higher than normal on top of razor blades. Mind not in tune with the game. Never in the right spot and you just can’t get your feet under you.

Then there is the fun. I do plenty of fun stuff but there is no fun quite like hockey fun. Passing, shoving, shooting, missing, skating, falling, laughing and drinking beer. Are you sold yet?

Is miss the ice. I should play a bit more.

When do you have your hockey weekend extravaganza? Is it at the end of the season or during the all-star game off-time, or when? Just asking to determine how much time you have to get in hockey shape! :)
