Sportstalk - Time to Chuck Some Axes!

Have you ever thrown axes? Neither had I until now!

I enjoy the Chamber of Commerce events for the networking and relationship building with the other business owners around this small town. There is a new chapter of the chamber called the Young Professionals who are breaking the mold and ushering in a new generation of business people with unique events. The latest one was an evening heaving sharp tools at bulls eyes.

A different business has recently opened up its doors here and it is a lot of fun. The owner is a great person with a background in real estate including owning the plaza where Stratford Axes https://www.stratfordaxes.ca/ lives. You can see from that site that they are a prime candidate for our Digital Marketing services and you will hopefully see a post from @town-crier if things go well. In the meantime, the facebook folks can see the info here https://www.facebook.com/stratfordaxethrowing/

The event started with a session for networking, food, drinks and a chance to work in groups and design a fictitious business to present to the group. We instantly built a business around a christmas decorating company that strings your lights, builds your nativity scenes, inflatables, and won't stop til your house can be seen from space like the Griswalds. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097958/

After waivers were signed, the owner gave us the tutorial and enough info to inspire us to start throwing.

Some were hesitant but everyone gave it a try seeing that the demonstrator was a 13-year old girl who was damn good at it. If she could do it, the young professionals can at least try.69765720_1384851241678328_5578615690857807872_o.jpg

Amazingly few rules including not stepping past the black line unless you are throwing, and no fetching your axe unless there is nobody throwing in the lane next to you.

As it generally does, things got competitive and we all played kind of a horse game. Each team had to hit 2 bulls eyes, 4 1s, 2s, 3,s and 4s.

It really did end up being fun and there was constant laughter and a bit of trash talk.

I must admit I did more picture taking than axe throwing but it was quite fun. Our team didn't end up winning as far as I know but learning something new and getting some business networking done over a couple beers was victory enough. Plus I can now say that I have thrown axes.

I will definitely go back. First of all to support a new small local business. Maybe to host an event for our business to celebrate our clients. Definitely going to bring the kids as they will like it and really enjoy seeing themselves as extreme and adventurous. Ax doesn't fall far from the tree I guess.

Alcohol plus thrown sharp weapons. What could possibly go wrong?

I love axe throwing. My wife and I were in an axe throwing league for a while.

While I have never tried this, i am quite sure that I would do so if it was available. There are a few videos out there of people seriously screwing up and having the axe fly back at them.

I've thrown both axes and hatchets before. And knives. And spears. And ninja stars. Not as a sport though.

The only sharp, dangerous things I've thrown as a sport are darts. :)

So you'd like to hear that story, eh? :) I'll start by saying the first thing I did was hit myself in the head with a hatchet! I think I was around 4 years old...

Honestly, I did try to throw an ax when there was a sporting store in the local area that supported and ax-throwing competition. It was quite exhilarating and just knowing that I could actually hit the target was pleasing to me. :)

Now, just don't tick me off and make me have to use my ax.

OMG... As if!

Great post and yes! Get those kids there! :)

This looks like great fun! Does the head of the axe really end up embedding most of the time? It reminds me a bit of a demonstration that some martial artists did... They were throwing chopsticks through things!

Not all the time no. You have to get the rotation down and work on your technique so that you are releasing it at the right point. You get it down pretty quickly though. Even the kids got the hang of it.
