Did Steem Engine Making Forking Steem Passe

avatar

We saw the Steem blockchain forked a number of times. Over the years, different projects came to Steem only to decide they were going to fork the blockchain and do things on their own.

Probably the most notable was Vice which was a projects that was backed by a number of porn related companies including Playboy. The idea was to replicate Steem but cater it to the adult content world. They were even going to include the SMTs as part of it, thus providing the ability to have different applications creating their own token.

Another project was Scorum. This caters to the world of sports while providing the same "Proof of Brain" that the Steem ecosystem has. It makes sense since it is a fork of Steem.

While forking Steem and having a project all on its own might seem appealing, there are a couple drawbacks.

As Playboy found out, it is not as simple as hiring a few IT people and taking off. The Vice situation seemed to die as lawsuits flew back and forth. It appears a blockchain developer that was hired did not provide what was promised. This ultimately destroyed the project.

Along the same lines, I am sure a lot went into the development of Scorum. The challenge there is the community is not real large. In other words, the idea is not taking off and the usage is down. It is not easy to start a community from scratch.

In my earlier post, I was provided a link that seemed to make a lot more sense. Instead of opting to go this route, a team took advantage of what is on Steem to fill a perceived void. We now see Sportstalksocial.com activated.

This is similar to PALnet in that it is a platform that caters to a certain crowd right here on Steem. By creating a token, rewards are provided to content creators.

sportstalk.png

Here we see simplicity along with a few additional benefits provided.

First, anyone on Steem can post on that site and earn by using the #sportstalk tag. This will post the content where people with the SPORT token can upvote it.

A second benefit is the ability to use Steem-Engine. I have a feeling part of the problem with something like Scorum is the fact the token is not liquid. Having the SPORT token on Steem-Engine, it can be converted to any other token created on there via STEEMP.

Finally, there is the Steem community. Whereas Vice and Scorum, or any other project, would have to generate their community, Steem already has one built in. Not only does the community exist but they are familiar with how Steem and cryptocurrency work. The process of what happens on Steem is well known. Nothing has to be explained. It is simply a matter of getting the hashtag out and the link to the website.

Considering the advantages, the bigger question is whether the forking of the blockchain is going to continue in the future. Why would a team opt to do that when it can, simply use the available tools and build upon the top of Steem? While I am sure there will be teams with enough experience and a built in community that does it, I think, for the most part, this replaced the idea of forking Steem.

PALnet certainly started something. This system could see the generation of hundreds of sites covering many different topics. We could see the target audience getting smaller. For example, instead of just sports, we could see a site dedicated to the Los Angeles Lakers. As always, the possibilities are incredible.

For something that was not around two weeks ago, it is wonderful to see the rapid advancement of this. I am sure there are more but it is good to see Sportstalksocial.com getting started on Steem. Hopefully that will be a place where sports enthusiasts start to assemble.

To check out the site and post on there:

https://www.sportstalksocial.com/

From what I understand, the #sportstalk is the tag to use.

I think a lot of content driven projects are going to take this route it makes a lot of sense and set up is pretty easy! While most are just using the basic condenser we seeing token BB creating forums and it won’t be long before we have publications like say for example RT who are already posting on here, create their own! I can see it being very appealing to medium publication too who don’t want to use pay wall monetizAtion

I think we are going to see a lot of customization over the next few months with it. Once the platform and system is in place, then I think you will see alterations. For now, it is a basic template; I have a feeling more will be added.

It is going to be excited to see what happens the second half of the year.

This is what Scorum should have waited for! I always found Scorum to be a weird site anyways, It's way too niche, crypto+sports only is gonna be hard to gather a big community, while if you create a community in Steem, the userbase is already there.

These Steem-Engine powered communities are becoming like subreddits for Steem lol

I would say that is a good analogy. The difference is each "subreddit" is monetized.

Monetized x2 since you can earn Steem + the community token :-D! The tokenization of the internet is happening here and now!

Was Scorum a separate chain before? Or am I remembering it incorrectly?

Scorum is a steem fork that happened months ago, completely unrelated with the new sports social!

Imagine if Steemit had actually delivered on their roadmap with SMTs. I guess the silver lining is that they put the idea out there and it was picked up by more competent actors later on.

Basically, this is why I've been here for 3 years. Built-in community. This is what Dan wants for Voice ( and, other related EOS dapps ) ,but will never get it imho.

It's also great to be sitting on top of the trending page as that is the only time it's going to happen. Never going to see it on steemit.com anyway. This must be like the original days on steemit 4 years ago. lol.

I won't lie. It feels great. I don't bidbot so have made trending once in 2 years and that was still a long way from the top.

It's cool to see these new communities form and I can see a future for them.

Awesome, I as you said in your previous post, Steem might just go to the background and function as core mechanism that allows all the other specific niche oriented tokens to boost each community... but for that to happen we need a lot of coordination between each community, steem-engine developers and Steemit inc. We shall see if this is achievable.

If Steem is a great Toolbox, someone will build with it. Best part is imo for Builders, there can use the community and dont have to build from scratch.

Why those others failed, or made it difficult for themselves to gain traction, is because STEEM is like a magazine rack at the store. The failures built a magazine rack, and put one magazine on it. STEEM built the magazine rack and is now filling it up with a variety of magazines.

Id love to be a part of all communities but honestly I just don't follow sports all that much :(

But you are right the major issue with many of these systems is the tokens had no value since they could not be traded. Many startups have crashed and burned because of this over the last year.

Steem-engine brings what we need in terms of supply and demand and that is what gives everything value.

Steem-Engine is a powerful addition to the blockchain. It is what allows for all the development to flip to the monetization model. Even if there is little value to start, it does offer the ability to trade. If the community is large enough, there will be liquidity.

I see people now appending #sportstalk #actnearn and #palnet to every one of their posts regardless of topic. If the token earnings are linked to tags, what's to stop people from just adding the #sportstalk tag to unrelated posts?

My guess is the same thing stopping unrelated posting in subreddits: downvoting.

Perhaps effective curation. At it is stage, many experiment to learn stuff. not every case is spam.

The Steem blockchain is really getting exciting day in day out.
You are right about it being hard starting a community from scratch!!

The challenge there is the community is not real large. In other words, the idea is not taking off and the usage is down. It is not easy to start a community from scratch.

I remember signing up on Scorum, but I guess I have never gone back there!!! I was there like for a week or so and I obviously came back to Steemit hehehe!!!

I have a feeling Sportstalk will blow up because of the community we have here!!

Not only does the community exist but they are familiar with how Steem and cryptocurrency work. The process of what happens on Steem is well known. Nothing has to be explained. It is simply a matter of getting the hashtag out and the link to the website.

The biggest number of people in the world over love sports and most would love to be paid for it !!!

I have even gotten ideas of sports to write about, my country Uganda won their first game convincingly in the just began Africa Cup of Nations Tournament(isn't this content for sportstalk hehehe).

I just realized that I have written a lot already all because of excitement!!!
The future is now.

Glad to see SportsTalkSocial on Steem blockchain. When we think about Sports based platform on blockchain, we usually think of Scorum. Now we have this platform. Thank you @taskmaster4450 for sharing this.

What isn't so known till it is found out is hard tough it is to maintain a blockchain, well and how expensive and how much steemit is doing in offering the blockchain that now allows for many dreams such as this to be built.
