The Gilas Pilipinas men's team has claimed the 13th title and 18th overall since the 1977 Southeast Asian Games.

In over 20 editions of the SEA Games basketball event, Team Philippines only twice failed to win the championship, the first in 1979 where they lost to Malaysia in hosting the biennial games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Philippines' second loser in the SEA Games was still in the hands of Malaysia in 1989 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and since then they have held the crown 13 times.

Since joining the Philippines in the SEA Games in 1977, it has dominated the basketball event with a total of 18 gold medals and two silver medals, Malaysia second with 2 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze.

Thailand is third in men's basketball in 8 silver and 8 bronze while Indonesia has four silvers and three bronzes.

Singapore has won just three bronzes in the SEA Games in history and Vietnam has only climbed to the podium after winning against Indonesia to clinch the bronze medal in the 2019 edition.

Although head coach Tim Cone has already collected 21 titles in the PBA including two Grand Slams, the national team's SEA Games gold medal in the 30th edition will be considered the most special as it is just his first gold medal in the international competitions.

"I've won a few championships in the PBA, but this is on the top," coach Cone said.

Coach Cone's other medal at international competitions was at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand where the Centennial Team finished with a bronze medal.
