Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nick Kyrgios - ATP Cup
Today I had the chance to see a good part of the ATP Cup match between Greece and Australian, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios representing the two countries. When I saw the two players knew right away that I'm going to watch a good and interesting match and was right.
Stefanos Tsitsipas made a name for himself when he won the ATP Finals against Roger Federer. I remember I did a post about it and thought this guy is talented and has a great future ahead of himself.
Nick Kyrgios also made a name for himself when he got fined with the biggest fine in tennis history for his tantrums. I made a post about this event as well as it made a lot of noise for a very good reason. At that times I felt sorry for the guy as people said he's talented but with an attitude and behavior like that he won't get far.
Imagine what I felt today when I saw the two in TV. I knew right away I'm about to witness a show with spicy moments, was looking forward to see Nick Kyrgios breaking his tennis racquet, giving a hard time to the referee but was wrong.
Stefanos Tsitsipas got 1 point penalization for hitting a ball at the Greek Team Zone but unfortunately I didn't see the event as it was in the beginning and I joined later.
After that the match was a joy to watch. I saw two very good players, professionals playing high quality tennis. Both of them were able to control their anger or frustration and offered us quite a show. Nick Kyrgios almost hit Stefanos Tsitsipas with the ball and he apologized right away which according to the commentator, it was a new thing. He hit a famous player once (can't remember who it was) and when asked why he didn't apologize he said at the money he won so far, can take a ball. This was rude obviously but it looks like he's learning.
Today he showed no sign of tantrums, he must have swallowed his frustration. He did some tweeners and usually made a mistake after but it was a good show. Both of them fought till the last second and Nick Kyrgios won. I was rooting for Stefanos Tsitsipas but no hard feelings, I'd say Nick Kyrgios's victory was well deserved.
Match results: 7-6(7), 6-7(3), 7-6(5).
