Hello, Hive family and this great community of memories called TBT. Today, I'm here to briefly tell you about an adventure I had before the pandemic, when I was a psychologist for a soccer academy here in my city.\r\n\r\nIn my nearly 20 years of professional practice in psychology, I had never worked in the field of sports, and I must say that the experience is unlike any other area of work. I have been a psychologist in the clinical, organizational, and educational fields; I have been a school and university teacher, but being on a field with children and teenagers who are committed to a sport as demanding as soccer is another story.\r\n\r\nThrough the video and the following photos, I will summarize almost a year of something new for me that strengthened my professional career even more, giving me incredible tools to apply in future experiences in the field of sports if I encounter this context again. Hola familia de Hive y de esta grandiosa comunidad de recuerdos llamada TBT; hoy les acompa\u00f1o para contarles brevemente una aventura que viv\u00ed antes de la pandemia, se trata de cuando fui psic\u00f3logo para una academia de futbol aqu\u00ed en mi ciudad.

En mis casi 20 a\u00f1os de ejercicio profesional en la psicolog\u00eda, nunca hab\u00eda trabajado en el \u00e1rea del deporte y debo decirles que la experiencia no se compara con otras \u00e1reas de trabajo. Yo he sido psic\u00f3logo en el \u00e1rea cl\u00ednica, organizacional, educativa; he sido docente escolar y universitario, pero estar en una cancha con ni\u00f1os y adolescentes que le apuestan a un deporte tan demandante como el futbol, es otra historia.

Total Pro Academy came to me through my nephew, who was part of it. One day, my brother asked me to take Gabriel to one of their training sessions, and to my surprise, the academy was just starting out. When I realized that they didn't have a psychologist (while other academies did), I offered my services to the technical director, and without thinking twice, he accepted. The only downside was that there was no contract or minimum salary, and what I earned was not proportional to what I would do, but I accepted it to make myself known and also out of necessity, as I had only been in the city for a short time and my financial situation was a bit depressing.\r\n\r\nThe experience was very new to me, and that excited me because I was charting my own course. I had to study a lot more about soccer, even though I had been a soccer player in my teens, and I had to study what FIFA establishes as performance evaluation parameters for a player. I had to adapt this to the ages of the kids, since we had children as young as 5 and teenagers as old as 15 and 16. The kids trained three times a week, and I went those three days in the afternoon and part of the evening. The coolest thing was that when the parents found out that the academy had a psychologist, my contact with them was more direct, and the academy's reputation quickly grew, attracting more kids to sign up.\r\n\r\n>

Total Pro Academy llega a mi por medio de mi sobrino, quien formaba parte de ella; mi hermano un d\u00eda me pidi\u00f3 el favor de llevar a Gabriel a uno de sus entrenamientos y para mi sorpresa la academia estaba empezando apenas su camino y cuando me di cuenta que no ten\u00edan psic\u00f3logo (mientras otras academias s\u00ed) le ofrec\u00ed mis servicios al director t\u00e9cnico y sin pensarlo mucho acept\u00f3. Lo \u00fanico malo de esto fue que no hab\u00eda contrato ni un sueldo m\u00ednimo, lo que yo ganaba no era proporcional a lo que har\u00eda pero lo acept\u00e9 para darme a conocer y tambi\u00e9n por necesidad ya que llevaba poco tiempo en la ciudad y mi situaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica era un poco deprimente.

La experiencia era muy novedosa para mi y eso me daba emoci\u00f3n porque yo mismo marcaba mi camino. Tuve que estudiar mucho m\u00e1s sobre el futbol a pesar de que yo fui futbolista en mi adolescencia y me toc\u00f3 estudiar lo que la FIFA establece como par\u00e1metros de evaluaci\u00f3n de desempe\u00f1o para un jugador. Esto tuve que adaptarlo a las edades de los chicos ya que ten\u00edamos desde ni\u00f1os de 5 a\u00f1os, hasta adolescentes de 15 y 16 a\u00f1os. Los chicos entrenaban 3 veces a la semana y yo iba esos 3 d\u00edas en la tarde y parte de la noche, lo m\u00e1s genial de todo es que cuando los padres se enteraron que la academia ten\u00eda psic\u00f3logo, mi contacto con ellos era m\u00e1s directo y la reputaci\u00f3n de la academia se increment\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente atrayendo a m\u00e1s chicos a inscribirse.

The academy, in the midst of its fame, attracted the support of a city councilman, which led to training sessions being moved to a larger field, as they had initially been held on a synthetic turf field rented by the director on a weekly basis. On the other hand, the kids became much more committed, and the responsibility of the teachers and myself increased. The most complex part was including my area's evaluations in the boys' daily training, but I succeeded, which earned me the acceptance of the parents and their congratulations for the coaching staff.\r\n\r\nThe boys supported and enjoyed my talks and preparations for the games, and they already felt confident when talking about any situation that upset them on the field. The relationship with all of them was so pleasant that whenever training ended, we would play a few games of soccer, and they liked how I played, haha...\r\n\r\nThe greatest satisfaction I achieved in a short time was helping to take the boys to the final of a local cup that was being played. Both the children's and under-15 categories had the joy of reaching the finals, putting on an incredible performance in front of the crowd, even though both ended up as runners-up. The coaching staff worked admirably for many weeks to ensure that the boys had the skills necessary to achieve what they did.\r\n\r\n>

La academia en medio de su fama, atrajo el apoyo de un concejal del municipio lo que llev\u00f3 los entrenamientos a un campo m\u00e1s grande ya que inicialmente se hac\u00eda en una cancha de grama sint\u00e9tica alquilada por el director semanalmente. Por otro lado, los chicos se compromet\u00edan mucho m\u00e1s y la responsabilidad de los docentes y m\u00eda aumentaba. La parte m\u00e1s compleja fue incluir las evaluaciones de mi \u00e1rea al entrenamiento cotidiano de los chicos pero lo logr\u00e9 con \u00e9xito lo que me acredit\u00f3 con la aceptaci\u00f3n de los padres y sus felicitaciones para el cuerpo t\u00e9cnico.

Los chicos apoyaban y disfrutaban mis charlas y preparaciones para los partidos, adem\u00e1s ya se sent\u00edan en confianza a la hora de hablar sobre alguna situaci\u00f3n que les desequilibrara en el campo de juego. La relaci\u00f3n con todos ellos fue tan agradable que siempre que terminaban los entrenamientos jug\u00e1bamos unos partidos de futbol y les gustaba como yo jugaba jeje...

La satisfacci\u00f3n m\u00e1s grande que consegu\u00ed en poco tiempo fue contribuir a llevar a los muchachos a la final de una copa local que se estaba jugando. Tanto la categor\u00eda infantil como la sub 15, tuvieron la dicha de llegar a las finales, haciendo un papel incre\u00edble frente a los presentes a pesar de que ambos quedaron de subcampeones. En el cuerpo t\u00e9cnico hicimos un trabajo admirable de muchas semanas para poder hacer que los chicos tuvieran las habilidades necesarias para lograr lo que lograron.

At the end of 2019, with a pandemic warning in place, we managed to close out the year's activities with all the kids and their parents before going on vacation. That day, we rented bouncy castles for the little ones and brought a PlayStation 4 to play a FIFA 20 tournament with the teenagers. We all decorated the place with blue balloons, had a barbecue, and played soccer with the kids' parents. It was a wonderful day.\r\n\r\n>

Finalizando el a\u00f1o 2019 y con aviso de pandemia en marcha, logramos hacer un cierre de actividades con todos los chicos y sus padres para luego irnos de vacaciones. Ese d\u00eda alquilamos castillos inflables para los peque\u00f1os y llevamos una Playstation 4 para jugar con los adolescentes un torneo en el juego de FIFA 20. Todos decoramos el lugar con globos azules, hicimos una parrillada y jugamos tambi\u00e9n futbol con los pap\u00e1s de los chicos, fue un d\u00eda maravilloso.

In view of the academy's rise, this led us to hold talks with parents from time to time so that they could keep abreast of their children's progress on the field. Each teacher provided an assessment of each child in their area of expertise. In my case, I evaluated the mental and emotional state of each player in correlation with their physical condition and performance. The parents really enjoyed these talks because we provided very comprehensive reports on each child, allowing them to see the effectiveness of our work through figures and statistics.\r\n\r\n>

En vista del ascenso de la academia, eso nos llev\u00f3 a hacer charlas a los padres cada cierto tiempo para que ellos estuvieran al tanto del avance de sus hijos en el campo de juego. Cada docente daba un balance desde su \u00e1rea de cada chico, en mi caso yo evaluaba el estado mental y emocional en correlaci\u00f3n con el estado f\u00edsico y el desempe\u00f1o de cada jugador. Loa padres disfrutaban mucho de estas charlas porque hac\u00edamos informes bien completos de cada chico para que vieran con cifras y estad\u00edsticas la eficacia del trabajo hecho por nosotros.

Total Pro currently does not exist. When the pandemic began, we had to continue what we had started through virtual classes. It wasn't the same, but it was a new way of working. It was very complex because the kids didn't have space in their homes to do certain activities, and others had frequent problems with the internet. The academy's finances went downhill, and when social isolation ended and we were able to return to the courts, more than half of the kids left the academy due to the imminent fear of COVID. The decision to close the academy was painful for all the teachers, but unfortunately, there was no other option...\r\n\r\nI got to know the coolest side of psychology. The field of sports, in addition to being demanding, led me to explore and strengthen many of my skills. For example, since I was a player when I was younger, I knew what the sport was all about. I'm almost bilingual, I have a high level of English, and that allowed me to communicate with kids who came from the US to train with us and didn't know any Spanish. I also further developed my ability to communicate my knowledge and had the honor of meeting one of the legends of Colombian soccer, the great V\u00edctor Hugo Aristiz\u00e1bal, known as \u201cAristigol,\u201d who is now a commentator for ESPN \ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\r\n\r\nIf I could repeat this experience again, I would gladly do so. Being a psychologist for an emerging or professional team is exciting and requires a lot of work, but I enjoyed every stage of what I did since I arrived at Total Pro. Colombia, and specifically Medell\u00edn, is the birthplace of great players, and being able to experience that firsthand is unlike anything else I have done in my profession. Soccer is a great sport, and I grew up in an environment where this sport was the best, apart from the fact that there were soccer players in my family. Total Pro actualmente no existe, cuando inici\u00f3 la pandemia nos toc\u00f3 continuar lo iniciado mediante clases virtuales, no era lo mismo, pero fue una nueva forma de trabajar; fue algo muy complejo porque los chicos no ten\u00edan espacio en sus casas para hacer ciertas actividades y otros ten\u00edan problemas frecuentes con el internet. Las finanzas de la academia se fueron a pique y cuando acab\u00f3 el aislamiento social y pudimos regresar a las canchas, m\u00e1s de la mitad de los chicos dejaron la academia por el temor inminente del covid. La decisi\u00f3n de cerrar la academia fue dolorosa para todos los docentes, pero lamentablemente no hab\u00eda otra opci\u00f3n...

Yo conoc\u00ed la cara m\u00e1s genial de la psicolog\u00eda, el \u00e1rea del deporte adem\u00e1s de ser exigente, me llev\u00f3 a explorar y a reforzar muchas de mis habilidades; por ejemplo, como yo fui jugador de joven, sab\u00eda como era el deporte en esencia. Yo soy casi biling\u00fce, tengo alto conocimiento del ingl\u00e9s y eso me permiti\u00f3 comunicarme con chicos que ven\u00edan de Estados Unidos a entrenar con nosotros y que no sab\u00edan nada de espa\u00f1ol. Igualmente nutr\u00ed m\u00e1s mi forma de comunicar mis conocimientos y tuve el honor de conocer a una de las leyendas del futbol colombiano, al gran V\u00edctor Hugo Aristiz\u00e1bal conocido como \"Aristigol\" quien hoy en d\u00eda es comentarista de la cadena televisiva ESPN \ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25

Si pudiera repetir esta experiencia nuevamente, lo har\u00eda con gusto, ser psic\u00f3logo de un equipo emergente o profesional es algo apasionante y que lleva mucho trabajo, sin embargo, yo disfrut\u00e9 cada etapa de lo que hice desde mi llegada a Total Pro. Colombia y espec\u00edficamente, Medell\u00edn, es la cuna de grandes jugadores y el hecho de haber podido vivir eso en primera fila, no se compara con algo m\u00e1s que haya hecho en mi profesi\u00f3n. El futbol es un gran deporte y yo crec\u00ed en un ambiente donde este deporte era lo mejor, aparte de que en mi familia hab\u00edan futbolistas.
