Hello, there! How is your life at your end? Hope that everything is happening according to your plan and expectation. I am also fine, Alhamdulillah. This is my 15th #iamalivechallenge post, the project run by @flaxz. This is also going to be my today's @actifit report. Firstly, I am going to share a case history of a patient with an abscess in his anus. Secondly, I will mention some take-home messages based on today's case history. Thirdly, I am going to mention why am I grateful for today. And finally, I am going to share the proof of today's win. Hope that you will stay with me until the end of the post.

The case history

One Bangladeshi patient of 41 years of age came to my chamber in the morning shift. He was having severe pain in the anal area for the last few days. The pain was so severe that he couldn’t sit comfortably. He was feeling pain while walking as well. Due to the pain, he couldn’t work either.

I examined his anus (asshole) and found a severely tender abscess (a lesion filled with pus) closed to his anal (hole) opening. It was tensed, meaning, the amount of the pus was more.

It was a surgical case. I usually try to avoid doing surgical procedures. If an abscess is found in the limbs, I sometimes perform minor procedures. A surgical procedure close to the anal opening is not a small or simple one. So, I told him to go to a surgeon. The problems were (1) surgeons are not readily available in my town, (2) it was Friday which is the holiday for most of the specialists. He was in severe pain. He was asking for some treatment to relieve the pain. I knew that without draining out the pus, the pain wouldn't subside. So, I did a small surgery on him. Under local anaesthetics, I made one small hole over the abscess and drained the most of the pus. I prescribed a broad-spectrum antibiotic, along with a painkiller. He then left.

Take-home messages:

  • An abscess is a collection of pus.
  • Pus is nothing but the collection of bacteria, dead tissues and protein-rich fluids.
  • The centre of an abscess is devoid of blood circulation, hence an antibiotic won't penetrate to its core. Means, without draining out the pus, antibiotics won't be 100% effective.
  • If an abscess is associated with features of a blood infection (aka septicemic toxicity), an antibiotic will be of more use.

Why am I grateful for today?

I am grateful to Allah because I am alive today.
I am grateful to my creator because I have never suffered from such type of abscess in any part of my body.
I am grateful to the almighty because He made a doctor. He used me as a medium to provide relief and comfort to someone else.

Alhamdulillah!
