Vegan Dog Treat Muffin
Decided to make these for the dogs. We have been feeding them vegan food for 2 years now and they love it! It took a few months of being vegan myself before I came across a vegan dog on YouTube and couldn't believe it. I thought dogs required meat to survive. I therefore looked into it a bit, read a few peer reviewed studies and countless case studies and discovered that it was easy for a dog to survive on plants alone. This is because all the nutrients they require can be sourced from plants. There is nothing specific in meat that is required. The same can't be said for cats as they require Taurine, an essential amino acid which can only be found in meat. The difference is that dogs can produce their own (like us humans too), while cats cannot. At the time I was feeding them some dry meat based kibble dog food, so just swapping it over to a plant based alternative seemed like a great choice as now my dogs are helping the environment too! They eat V-Dog crunchy nuggets as their daily food and have continued to eat it for 2 years now. Did you know one of the longest living dogs to have ever lived was a Border Collie that lived to 27 years old!
Anyway, I made these as an alternative to their daily V-Dog food just to give them a treat :) They're made up mostly of potato, carrot and couscous. Simply cook up, mash up and add some flour, stirring to form a batter-like consistency adding water where necessary, then put in a muffin case (I use a silicon mold) and bake for 20 mins or so.
Ted is not fussy at all when it comes to food. He will literally eat anything you give him. He will even eat salad leaves. He's so desperate to be a human lol. As you can see he had no trouble scoffing this down in just a couple of bites!
Isaac is a bit more cautious. I find this photo funny because it looks like he's staring at the muffin thinking "what on earth is this?!". Nevertheless he demolished it as well after sussing out it was food lol. Isaac is a wary dog. He was a very scared puppy and it took months for him to trust anyone else other than me. It took a lot of training to help him overcome his fears, but there is still a level of wariness in him, hence the trepidation around this new food he has been given!
Ted is so greedy he asked for more. I let him have half :)

Aww, such cute pups! It is interesting to know that about dogs. My sister has made dog biscuits before and they were basically all things that I would eat. :)

I’ve been feeding mine a quinoa, rice carrot and apple blend for years. He also loves salads and basically any disc that doesn’t have onions or garlic he gets to try. Love there’s others out there!

Although yours are vegans, mine are real fans of meat

haha well they're not vegan by choice! They love meat too. But as a vegan myself I don't want to cause unnecessary harm to animals which is what happens when you treat them as commodities, so buying meat for my dogs goes against my principles. So when I found out dogs don't actually require it to survive I was quite pleased! Isaac still eats meat when he catches it, he is a natural born hunter. So far in his life he has caught 2 rabbits, a pheasant and something else I didn't see but he came back with his mouth covered in blood! When it's natural I have no issue. Factory farming is not natural and the animals suffer terribly. It's very sad. Even with "free range" meat their lives are cut incredibly short, plus free range is a lot worse for the environment than factory farms because of the space required - endless amounts of vegetation / ecosystems are cleared to make way for the fields for them to graze in, the amazon rain forest being a prime example. Therefore I don't think there's a way we can all eat meat in an ethical way (cause there's so many of us), unless we have it a LOT less frequently.
Anyway sorry for the lecture I just had to explain myself!
