Why Rest Days Make You Dangerous

avatar

Yesterday I did the hardest thing in the world: nothing. And guess what? It worked. Rest day = cheat code. Today I woke up with enough energy to power a small village, so instead of one walk, I knocked out two. Because why not flex on future me?

11 kilometers. 13,000 steps. Not bad for a guy who literally did zero the day before. People underestimate recovery like it’s optional. It’s not. It’s oxygen. It’s like charging your phone, except you don’t get to plug into the wall, you plug into Apple TV+ and snacks.

And here’s the kicker: the walks didn’t even feel like “exercise.” They felt like scrolling Instagram in real life. The sky was throwing mood swings like a teenage drama, dark clouds, golden light, and then boom, sun rays like a motivational poster. The trees looked like they were auditioning for an autumn calendar, and the water was calm enough to make you think deep thoughts like, “Wow, maybe I am the main character.”

Here’s the lesson: success (even in walking) isn’t about pushing every single day until you break. It’s about knowing when to pause so you can come back swinging. People love to glorify the grind, but let me tell you, rest is part of the grind. Otherwise, you’re just a zombie counting steps.

Some really profound stuff there! We often get caught up in trying to push ourselves too hard and rest days are difficult. Mentally, some people find it difficult to just be alone with themselves, whether it's fighting off the guilt of just doing nothing or just REALLY not wanting to be alone with our thoughts. Sometimes exercise can be a way of escaping or literally running away from our problems that and some times that's a really good thing and provides a vacation from your mind, but it eventually catches up with you. Rest is just as important as "busy days." Learning ow to sit quietly with your ghosts and still rest is a very difficult skill to learn.

So much of finding balance is going into imbalance for a time. I'm glad that you took a day just to rest, my friend, and that you got two glorious walks the next day, congratulations! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Good you got a nice rest day. People really underestimate rest days or feel even guilty for having one. Doing actively nothing is good for body and soul. That doesn't mean you should be a lazy pretzl every day but having a rest day helps a lot sometimes.
