Weekly walk on Lovers Jump Creek - wasp orchids and leeches : January 28 2023

avatar

Another steamy day- humidity is climbing. Spent the morning writing up the week's investing posts. Was in my mind to go look for midge orchids in a different place - did not happen

Did a little garden work - sweaty stuff

Went walking Lovers Jump Creek - north side to see if there were midge orchids that side. Started with the loop down on south side of rainforest to check wasp orchids. A few flowering on north side of the track for first time this year - ID toss up between chiloglottis seminuda or sylvestri

New bud forming in a known spot - getting this photo scored a leech on the hand that went to ground for the photo

The leech cost me lots of photos not in focus - every tickle gets me hopping

Could be two orchids - seminuda has calli going half was down the labellum a d sylvestris has calli that stand a bit more like an Afro wig

Next ID challenge - genus is epacris - coral heath - note the shape of these petals

Wavy margins - look different to me

Broad leaved geebung - later than others I have seen

Zoom back to see the broad leaves

Skink sunning - was happy to let me get closer for photos

Pea flower - twining glycine

More differences on the coral heath

Did find lots of bonnet orchids - held off photos of ones seen already - this one past Clissold Road join

Was expecting to find a few hyacinth orchids - this one hiding under the ferns - not seen them here

Seeded form on the way back

Noticed some blood oozing on the edges of my sandal - I had not felt the invasion but knew I had to look

This one got me - they give me the creeps

One more hyacinth orchid - dipodium variegatum

Walking this track pains me given the track widening they have done in the sewer relining project - a new track they have carved through the bush to access the sewer lines for the houses up here. No orchids

Dinner: My wife cooked chicken massaman curry - good to have a day off

What a lovely shots of flowers and creatures. I am a big fan of nature and I do enjoy watching them every now and then. Once in a while, I do venture into a nearby bush to take some shots of these creature and plants.
Thank you for sharing.
