Description from Strava:

Woodhall Spa is a pretty little market town here in Lincolnshire (approx. 10 miles east of Lincoln).

Woodhall Spa came about by accident in 1811 when John Parkinson made several failed attempts to find coal. The enterprise was abandoned after the 1000-foot-deep shaft filled with spring water. It was then discovered that the iodine-rich water had healing benefits. Spa Baths were built so that visitors could ‘take the waters’, and hotels followed. source

Even though the baths have now gone, the town remains a popular place for tourists to visit, with a good range of independent shops, and a variety of guest houses and hotels

It also has other points of interest, such as being the home of English Golf, but we don't care about golf, or the shops either for that matter!

We're here because apparently its a nice place to walk. My partner and I are both on holiday, and so we've driven to Woodhall Spa for the day to have a stroll in the great outdoors.

My partner found a map of a medium length walk (approx 8 miles). It starts in the town centre, and is a mostly circular loop around some of the nearby woods and villages.

It is the middle of January, and probably not the best time of year for a walk to be honest, but we've got time off and we are determined to do something!

It wasn't the best of starts as we went to visit the 'Cottage Museum', which also doubles as the tourist infomation centre here in Woodhall.

It was closed, opening in Spring 2026

Oh well, guess we'll just go for the walk then!

A note on the weather... it was grim today. Cold, wet, windy and very VERY muddy.

5.jpg

Once we left the town behind, the pavements turned into a variety of bridleways, trails and muddy tracks. It would've been reasonably scenic if the sky hadn't been so so grey and gloomy

the relentless rain didn't help either!

6.jpg

7.jpg

this was a very soggy field, my boots aren't waterproof, and so it was unsurprising that my feet started to get wet. We were only 2 miles in at this point, and was only gonna get worse

8.jpg

9.jpg

The trail passed briefly through a small woodland - Halstead Wood

The route then took us through a muddy farm, and then we headed straight into Stixwould Wood, seen below.

11.jpg

Both of the woods were interesting to walk through, and they were definitely less muddy and wet than the surrounding fields. A case in point was the field we had to cross after leaving Stixwould would

13.jpg

At this point we had walked through the boggy margins on the field edges, but now our trail ran directly across a field. This wasn't just muddy, but 'sticky' as well. I made the mistake of pausing to talk tell my partner to stop dawdling, and my right foot started to sink in the mud... I swear I nearly lost a boot trying to pull it out again!

14.jpg

Finally on the other side of the field, we rejoined the path...

15.jpg

...and made use of the welcome road we found to stamp some of the mud off

This was the village (Hamlet?) of Stixwould which appeared to consist of only 7 houses and a nice little church

16.jpg

By this point we had been walking for almost 2 hours, and we were both cold and wet through.

Checking the map we realised that we could cut some corners off the walk if we stuck to the main road. This would also mean we could avoid any more mud, and also mean we get back to Woodhall Spa sooner rather than later

Some quiet country roads, and grassy paths later, we finally made it back to our start point.

20.jpg

To be fair it wasn't a bad walk. There was a lot of variety in the paths and terrain, and some pretty little woods to walk through... it was let down by the weather. We might try this one again, but if so we'd definitely wait until the summertime for the next attempt!
