Midweek plod - 9km

dannewton just finished a 9.06km run, that lasted for 63 minutes.
This run helped dannewton burn 984.6 calories.

Description from Strava: Just a standard midweek plod. And it definitely felt like a plod. Sometimes I run, sometimes I dash, very occasionally I have been know to sprint.

tonight was definitely a plod.

Don't really know why. The temperature today barely touched 20C, which was a blessed relief compared to the last few days. The heat caused issues at night which means that my sleep for the past 3 nights have been utterly appalling. That might explain today's lacklustre performance.

I arrived home from work, to find my partner preparing dinner. She informed me it would be ready in about an hour. Without a moment to lose I quickly changed and headed back out. The route was simple: I ran in one direction for 30mins and then turned round and ran home.

I didn't aim for a certain distance, but I manged to cover 9km, which is pretty reasonable for a standard plod haha! Now it's time to rest this evening, and I can now look forward to the parkrun on Saturday.

About the Athlete: Living in the UK, I am an intermittent Runner, but always striving for more consistency. When I'm not training I can be found photographing insects or listening to really loud angry music (which is the best type of music obviously!)

Really good you have had some releif from the heat, at least for a few days. You might just still need a couple of cooler days to recover. Nice work mate.

er yep.. as it happened the run was an indication that either the heat has affected me, or that I have over done it recently. So today I skipped the scheduled run. Needs must and all that.

7 minutes / km sounds like quite slowly...?... !LUV !CTP

That speed is about 2.4 meters per second, which still looks fast for a run that is almost 10 kilometers. 🤓😏

What's the difference between a rain gutter and a clumsy outfielder?
One catches drops, the other drops catches.

yep it was slow... might have been due to the recent extreme temperatures, or just over training.

I decided to take skip the session on Saturday as a precaution (possibly a flare up of an old injury)

It's definitely better to skip a training than to over train. Over training makes you slower, recovering more difficultly and most importance most injuries find their beginning there...
Thanks for the !PIZZA but it'll only work with the exclamation mark in fromt of the PIZZA I guess, not behind it ;-)

It's definitely better to skip training than to overtrain

That sounds obvious, but is still great advice for those who want to train a lot. 🤓

It's true that the bot commands work only if you put the exclamation mark (!) at the beginning of the command (such as !PIZZA and !LUV). 😏

It sounds obvious, but it isn't always very easy to detect when one is overtraining, especially not by the athlete himself... Apart from detecting the point where one starts to overtrain, it's difficult as well to convince oneself not to continue anyway.... !PIZZA !CTP

Speaking of overtraining, would you say that not exercising everyday is a sign of undertraining? 🤔🤓

Thanks for the !PIZZA and the !CTP! 😀

No, i would say the opposite. Not exercising every day is the way of training like it's supposed to be. Rest or giving your body the time to receover is a very important part of training. !PIZZA !CTP

It sounds like not training every day is oftentimes helpful (especially for beginners). 🤓

Thanks for the advice, the !PIZZA, and the !CTP! 😀

You plod is my normal. You must be way taller than me. I guess that's why you burn more calories than my short ass, too.

lol, well you keep doing your normal then, over time you'll get quicker. I think I've said before that speed is relative, and you'd be better focusing on yourself etc. Do you use any apps to record your sessions? I find with strava it allows me to keep track of what I'm doing, and that helps me to improve.

Regarding calories, if we were equal in height and weight, then I'd almost certainly burn a few more calories due to being male. And I'm not particularly tall, so unless you are a midget, then its probably due to me being significantly fatter lol

[Oh and the calorie estimate is only an estimate based on height and weight so your app might be under estimating and my app may be over estimating...]

LOL sooooo. I was logging my exercise on my food tracker and with a step monitor. Turns out I was grossly underestimating my calorie burn, which explains why running kept getting harder and harder since I guess I was netting way under 1,000 calories a day. So I got strava and what do you know, I'm faster than I thought and running got easier! We're in a crazy heat wave right now though and I can only run if it's early and early just doesn't come every day for me.
My cousin has a fitbit and it seems pretty accurate, but honestly I don't know how neurotic I want to be about it. I always tell myself hey, at least I'm doing this...

then its probably due to me being significantly fatter lol

The one advantage to being heavier is a faster calorie burn! Maybe I can get a weighted belt. Laced with testosterone.

Ah well there you go! Apps are only random generic programs, so its only ever gonna be a guess.

So I got strava and what do you know, I'm faster than I thought

Whoop whoop! Thats always a plus! Yeah I don't know where you are in the states, but I know theres crazy hot weather over many parts of it at the moment. Exercise when you can, and its totally ok to skip a session or two. It'll cool down eventually

Theres a Hive Group over on strava if you wanted to join?

...but honestly I don't know how neurotic I want to be about it.

it can be easy to obsess over numbers (and strava is full of them). The same goes with weighing scales and calorie counting as well. I do have to occasionally remind myself to step back and see the bigger picture

I could join the group. Why not?

Ultimately I want to learn how to make sense of these numbers and know the balance of food and exercise so I can eat everything and run really fast. In moderation. Of course.
