A different route through the city (Eng/Esp)

English version

When I go out for a walk for fun, I make a point of taking alternative routes to the ones I usually take. I'll reach the same destination but by a different route, which has led me to explore and learn more about the city. This time I was in downtown Cumaná, and instead of walking through Bolívar Square, I decided to take La Ermita Street, which runs from the Basilica of Santa Inés to General Salom Street, passing behind Bolívar Square and the Sucre State Government building.

It is usually a very quiet street, narrow because it is one-way, and well remembered by older people because there used to be a plaza and a public fountain there, where residents of the San Francisco, Mundo Nuevo, and Miramar neighborhoods would come to collect water to take to their homes. At that time, the city had dirt roads.

There is still a sense of nostalgia when walking down La Ermita Street, where you can see buildings from the last century that look dilapidated but still refuse to fall down. Houses made of cane and wattle and daub coexist with more modern buildings. It could be said that part of La Ermita remains frozen in time. You can still see what used to be the Santa Inés Bakery, a very traditional place that, until a few years ago, was an almost obligatory stop for those who left mass and went to buy sweet and savory breads there.

The contrast between La Ermita Street and Plaza Bolívar is striking: one resists succumbing to the modernity that transforms everything, while the other is a symbol of the new era. This time, I walked surrounded by history, tradition, and memories.
