I think that sometimes, we all think we HAVE to do 10,000 or more steps a day, no matter what! You are correct; life is a marathon, and some days just don't make the 10,000. Movement is movement, and there will always be a better opportunity to get that movement. If you need rest, you need rest! I've had to learn that the hard way.
