Yes the competition is far less and as long as you make the qualification times you are eligible if there are no other athletes better than you from your country or are even bothered in entering.

This is true for some countries, but with countries like Norway, where there are so many good athletes, this is a big problem. The commentator said there are international competitions, where participation per country is not limited and Nordic countries sometimes have 10 athletes on the first 10 places. Obviously this is an exception, as not many countries are good enough to grow so many good athletes.

Holy heaven, then you're in an even worse situation, if non English speakers are commenting the event and they are not good at it either.
