Quizás, en la riqueza de las reglas del Baseball, está la dificultad para el aficionado común de comprender éste deporte. Y como lo hemos dicho antes, la simplicidad siempre será más efectiva que lo complejo. No es cuestión de flojera mental, es ahorro de energía cerebral, un mecanismo creado por la evolución para evitar pérdida de calorías innecesarias. Sin embargo, pienso en esa riqueza al ser el deporte más reglamentado del mundo, como una oportunidad para enamorarse de él. Pongamos como ejemplo, un completo reportaje publicado hoy por el site de la MLB, donde se explaya en explicaciones sobre las nuevas regulaciones respecto a los retos por lanzamientos fuera de la zona de strike que comenzarán a regir desde la campaña 2026. El sistema ABS (Automatic Balls and Strikes) debutará en las Grandes Ligas y trae con él, una cantidad de consideraciones para jugadores y dirigentes, que podrían cambiar la manera de jugar los partidos de pelota.

Un sistema que hizo su debut en ligas menores por allá en 2019 y que se ha estado probando desde entonces para afinarlo. En MLB se probó por vez primera en la pretemporada del año pasado con muy buenos resultados, dando el visto bueno por la oficina del comisionado para la luz verde en ésta zafra ¿En que consiste? Ahora, lanzadores, receptores o bateadores podrán retar el conteo de bolas y strikes, solo durante dos (2) oportunidades durante el juego de nueve episodios. Si el partido va a entradas extras, sólo podrán retar el conteo una vez en cada entrada adicional. El reto en el que la decisión sea cambiada a favor del retador, se conserva como oportunidad, el desafío que ratifica la decisión del umpire, se pierde. De éste modo, los equipos tendrán que cuidarse a la hora de retar lanzamientos, dado que corren el riesgo de perder la discusión, para una entrada tardía donde un reto podría cambiar la cara del partido.
