Hubo una época no muy lejana donde los Cardenales de San Luis reinaban en la división central de la liga nacional. Eran los "reyes del mambo" y los demás equipos debían rendir pleitesía a la dinastía de la ciudad del arco. Pero las cosas no serán siempre color de rosas y eso quedó demostrado el año pasado cuando la franquicia arribó en el último lugar de la división, luego de 33 años sin visitas al sótano. Y debe doler mucho. Muchísimo al considerar que San Luis es una de las ciudades más beisboleras de la unión americana.

     Los Cardenales jugaron para récord de 71 ganados y 91 perdidos y batallaron a lo largo de la temporada con lesiones e inconsistencias del grupo de estrellas que alimentan su roster. Colectivamente al bate no lo hicieron mal, dado el lugar que obtuvieron en un universo de 30 equipos: 12. Pero el pitcheo descalabró hasta el puesto 24 de 30 con una astronómica EFE 4.79 y eso es casi 5 carreras permitidas por cada nueve entradas lanzadas. Ni en los sueños más locos, alguien puede clasificar a postemporada con un cuerpo de lanzadores de ese calibre.

     There was a time not too long ago when the St. Louis Cardinals reigned supreme in the National League Central Division. They were the "kings of the mambo" and the other teams had to pay homage to the dynasty from the city with the arch. But things will not always be rosy and that was demonstrated last year when the franchise arrived in last place in the division, after 33 years without visits to the basement. And it must hurt a lot. A lot when you consider that St. Louis is one of the most baseball-friendly cities in the United States.

     The Cardinals played to a record of 71 wins and 91 losses and struggled throughout the season with injuries and inconsistencies from the star-studded roster. Collectively at bat they did not do badly, given the place they earned in a universe of 30 teams: 12. But the pitching slumped to 24th out of 30 with an astronomical 4.79 EFE and that's almost 5 runs allowed per nine innings pitched. Not in the wildest dreams could anyone qualify for the postseason with a pitching staff of that caliber.

     El buen mánager de San Luis, el dominicano Oliver Mármol le ha tocado dirigir un equipo que se ha ido desmembrando con los retiros de Yadier Molina y Adam Wainwright. Entra al último año de su contrato de tres y está consciente del enorme trabajo que tendrá por delante para no repetir el resultado, si desea renovar su puesto. Habló con la gerencia del equipo para hacerse de algunos veteranos en la temporada baja y en una arriesgada apuesta, intentará que no le dejen mal parado porque trocó sangre joven por veteranía.

     No en balde los especialistas dictaminan que es un equipo con demasiada gente establecida y carente de irreverencia novel. El tiempo dirá si el hombre se equivocó, no antes. Dentro del roster de 40 nos sorprende no encontrar protegido a Juan Yépez, prospectazo que el año pasado demostró lo que puede ser su futuro como cardenal. Aún así se encuentra invitado al campo de entrenamiento con contrato de liga menor. Pero no comprendemos el porqué no está con el equipo grande, misterios inexpugnables.

     The good manager of St. Louis, Dominican Oliver Marmol, has had the task of managing a team that has been dismembered with the retirements of Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright.      El único venezolano del equipo en el roster será titular desde el día uno: Willson Contreras es un cátcher de élite que tuvo una línea ofensiva de AVE .264, 20 cuadrangulares y 67 carreras impulsadas. Con solo 5 errores en 715 lances, es uno de los mejores catchers defensivos de las mayores y el año pasado capturó a 14 hombres robando bases, la mayor cantidad en su carrera, en un año donde las reglas del tamaño de bases cambiaron para hacerlas más grandes y favorecer las bases estafadas.

     Si Oliver Mármol acierta con la estrategia de veteranos agregados al cuerpo de abridores y los Cardenales continúan bateando como el año pasado, es posible verlos salir del sótano de la división. Pero con el talento joven que tiene sus contendores (en especial Milwaukee), tendrán que servirse de un milagro para ser retratados en la postemporada. Algo que esperan con fervor los fanáticos de una ciudad que no espera menos. Nos leemos por allí.

     The team's only Venezuelan on the roster will be a starter from day one: Willson Contreras is an elite catcher who had a .264 AVE offensive line, 20 homers and 67 RBIs. With only 5 errors in 715 pitches, he is one of the best defensive catchers in the majors and last year he caught 14 men stealing bases, the most in his career, in a year where the base-stealing size rules changed to make them bigger and favor swiped bases.

     If Oliver Marmol gets it right with the strategy of adding veterans to the starting staff and the Cardinals continue to hit like last year, it is possible to see them climb out of the division cellar. But with the young talent of their contenders (especially Milwaukee), they will have to work a miracle to be portrayed in the postseason. Something the fans of a city that expects nothing less are fervently hoping for. We will read you there.
