La bahía de San Francisco puede ser disfrutada de varias maneras, pero una de ellas la vivimos in situ en 2015 cuando transitamos el enorme sistema de autopistas que le rodean. Perdido dentro de esa maraña pudimos observar el Oracle Park, sede de los Gigantes de San Francisco y en aquel momento poco podía imaginar que -años después- me encontraría escribiendo sobre el spring training del equipo. Pero aquí estamos y pasemos a revisar el año 2023 de los chicos de la bahía.

     Algo que sucedió durante el paso de Pablo Sandoval (AKA "Kung Fu Panda") por el equipo, fue que se percibía una especie de dinastía. Lejos quedaron aquellos días y el balance de 79 ganados - 83 perdidos, además de haber quedado hundidos en el penúltimo lugar de la división, dice mucho de los problemas por los que pasaron estos eternos contendores. Fue uno de los equipos que menos bateó al juzgar por su pírrico AVE colectivo de .235 y eso es mortal en una división donde se encuentran los Dodgers, los Padres y los D-Backs.

     The San Francisco Bay Area can be enjoyed in several ways, but one of them we experienced in situ in 2015 when we traveled the huge freeway system that surrounds it. Lost within that tangle we were able to observe Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants and at that moment little could I have imagined that -years later- I would find myself writing about the team's spring training. But here we are and let's move on to review the year 2023 of the boys from the bay.

     Something that happened during Pablo Sandoval's (AKA "Kung Fu Panda") tenure with the team was that a sort of dynasty was perceived. Those days are long gone and the balance of 79 wins - 83 losses, in addition to being in second to last place in the division, says a lot about the problems that these eternal contenders went through. They were one of the teams that batted the least judging by their pyrrhic collective AVE of .235 and that is deadly in a division that includes the Dodgers, Padres and D-Backs.

     Si no quedaron en el último lugar y también jugaron casi para .500 en el balance de ganados y perdidos, fue porque el pitcheo colectivo no lo hizo tan mal, se ubicaron en el puesto once de un universo de 30 equipos. Sin embargo la EFE colectiva de 4.07 es muy grande para un equipo que intenta luchar por un puesto en la postemporada. Así las cosas, los Gigantes se movieron en el invierno y además de las contrataciones para ayudar, obtuvieron la firma de Bob Melvin como nuevo mánager de San Francisco.

     Tres venezolanos formarán parte de la nómina desde el vamos: Wilmer Flores va a su onceava temporada y cuarta con el equipo de la bahía. Famoso por haber demostrado en público su afectación por ser cambiado desde los Mets, Wilmer funcionó como comodín del cuadro interior y bateador designado. Un utility de lujo, Flores tuvo una línea de AVE .284, 23 cuadrangulares y 60 impulsadas, las dos primeras cifras fueron topes de su carrera en poco más de 400 turnos al bate. Seguirá siendo suplente número uno del infield.

     If they didn't finish in last place and also played nearly .500 in win-loss record, it was because the collective pitching didn't do too badly, they ranked eleventh out of a universe of 30 teams. However, the collective EFE of 4.07 is too big for a team trying to fight for a postseason berth. As it was, the Giants made moves in the winter and in addition to the signings to help, they obtained the signature of Bob Melvin as San Francisco's new manager.

     Three Venezuelans will be part of the roster from the start: Wilmer Flores is in his eleventh season and fourth with the Bay Area team. Famous for publicly demonstrating his affectation at being traded from the Mets, Wilmer functioned as an infield wild card and designated hitter. A luxury utility, Flores had a .284 AVE line, 23 homers and 60 RBIs, the first two figures were career highs in just over 400 at-bats. He will remain the number one infield reliever.

     Thairo Estrada será el segunda base titular. Ganador del premio Willie Mac al jugador más inspirador del año en el equipo, Thairo va a su sexta campaña en las mayores y la cuarta con los Gigantes. Bateó para una línea de AVE .271, 14 jonrones y 49 impulsadas. Aprovechó las nuevas reglas del tamaño de las bases para estafar 23 durante el periplo. Luis Matos es un novato subido en Septiembre pasado y que viene a ganarse el puesto, aunque está protegido en el roster de 40.

     Y quizás recordando el pasado, otro que firmó un contrato de liga menor con invitación al spring training fue Pablo Sandoval, quien viene a ganarse el puesto con 37 años. Dudamos que haga el equipo, pero nunca se sabe. San Francisco tiene una misión: batear más. Sólo así, sin descuidar el pitcheo, podrán dar alcance a los primeros lugares que -ahora mismo- parecen estar en manos de sus compañeros de división. Nos leemos por allí.

He batted for an AVE .271 line, 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. He took advantage of the new base-size rules to swipe 23 during the tour. Luis Matos is a rookie brought up last September and is coming to earn his spot, although he is protected on the 40-man roster.

     And perhaps harkening back to the past, another who signed a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training was Pablo Sandoval, who is coming to earn his spot at age 37. We doubt he will make the team, but you never know. San Francisco has a mission: to hit more. Only in this way, without neglecting pitching, will they be able to reach the first places that -right now- seem to be in the hands of their division mates. We will read you there.
