In a few hours a new round of South American qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup begins.

Unlike what happens on the European continent, where due to the large number of participants must compete in different groups, some of six members and others of five, in South America the relatively small number of teams means that they compete against each other in a single group.

The top four qualify directly and the fifth team goes to the playoff with the winner of the Oceania zone.

After several ups and downs, the qualifying stage started in October 2020, seven months later than expected as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic that hit the world and of which there are still traces.

For this reason, and in order to make up for the matches not played in a timely manner, each qualifying round will consist of three matches instead of the usual two.

There will be 18 matches (home and away) between the 10 teams. This round, therefore, marks the beginning of the second part of the qualifying rounds, or in other words, the revenge matches.

Uruguay came back with a lot of grit in their last few games and are now among the qualifiers, while Colombia is struggling to get out of the playoffs.

Peru and Chile know that if they do not get on this train their chances of going to Qatar next year are more than remote.

Almost all matches will be played at the same time, except for time zone differences.

Tite and Neymar's team has so far a perfect score. Eight games played and eight won. At home or away, they have no problem winning even if sometimes they don't shine too much. Practical and forceful, they have players who are perfectly suited to that role.

Argentina is more fluctuating and depends on Messi and the association and rapport he seems to be achieving with his new teammates. In the last match against Bolivia he scored a hat-trick and a new record as historical scorer of South American national teams, surpassing Pelé himself.

In this decisive stage, no one can make mistakes because the risk is simply to be eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar 2022. An illusion to which everyone, without exception, has clung. And no wonder, it is the greatest showcase of world soccer.

A diferencia de lo que ocurre en el continente europeo deonde debido al gran número de participantes se debe competir en diversos grupos, algunos de seis integrantes y otros de cinco, en Sudamérica el número relativamente exiguo de seleccdionados hace que compitan todos contra todos en un único grupo.

Clasifican los cuatro primeros directamente y el quinto va alk repechaje con el ganador de la zona de Oceania.

Brasil parece no tener demasiados problemas en clasificar. Con un partido menos (recordemos la suspensión del clásico con Argentina como local debido a la negativa del seleccionado argentino de mandar de vuelta los jugadores que pertenecían a la Premier League) encabeza las posiciones con suma comodidad.

Argentina segundo a seis puntos también parece estar al resguardo de cualquier sorpresa.

Lionel Messi y Lautaro Martínez una copia de ataque fundamental en el seleccionado que dirige Scaloni.

Hasta el momento los restantes clasificados son uruguay con 15 puntos y Ecuador con 13 que comparte esa posición con Colombia pero tiene mejor problema de gol.

Si la etapa clasificatoria terminara en este momento los cafeteros irían al repechaje.

Después de varias marchas y contramarchas, la etapa clasificatoria comenzó en Octubre de 2020 siete meses más tarde de lo previsto como consecuencia de la pandemia de coronavirus que azotó el mundo y de la cuál aún quedan vestigios.

Por esa razón y para recuperar los partidos no jugados oportunamente cada ronda clasificatoria está compuesta por tres partidos en vez de los dos como usualmente ocurre.

Se jugarán 18 partidos (ida y vuelta) entre las 10 selecciones. Se inicia, por lo tanto, con esta ronda, la segunda parte de las eliminatorias, o dicho de otra manera, los partidos revancha.

Argentina tendrá un duro rival en Paraguay en tierras guaraníes mientras que Brasil aparentemente no corre demasiados riesgos visitando a Venezuela.

Uruguay y Colombia son el plato fuerte de la jornada ya que ambos luchan por clasificar en la parte baja de la tabla. Lo mismo que Ecuador y Bolivia.

Perú y Chile saben que si no se suben a este tren las posibilidades de ir a Catar el año próximo son más que remotas.

Ultimas chances para Chile y Perú que han tenido hasta el momento una pobre campaña.

Al término de esta nueva ronda Brasil especialmente, pero también Argentina, pueden quedar tal vez no matemáticamente clasificados, pero si muy cerca de ello. Dependerá de los resultados obtengan y que pueden sostener sus ambiciones y su tranquilidad.

El equipo de Tite y Neymar tiene hasta ahora un puntaje perfecto. Ocho partidos jugados y ocho ganados. Como local o visitante no tiene ningún problema en ganar aunque a veces no brille demasiado. Práctico y contundente tiene los jugadores que se adaptan perfectamente a ese rol.

Lo de Argentina es más intermitente y depende de Messi y de la asociación y compenetración que parece estar logrando con sus nuevos compañeros. En el último partido con Bolivia marcó un triplete y un nuevo récord como goleador histórico de los seleccionados sudamericanos superando al mismo Pelé.

En esta etapa decisiva ninguno puede cometer errores porque el riesgo es simplemente quedar eliminado del Mundial de Catar 2022. Una ilusión a la que todos, sin excepción, se han aferrado. Y no es para menos, es la mayor vitrina del fútbol mundial.
