Scientific review, Benefits of baking soda

Baking soda is a very popular household product, it has many uses, such as in the kitchen, cleaning and personal hygiene, but in addition to this, lately many athletes and people who do physical activity are using it as a supplement. to improve physical performance and the question is this is real.

Sodium bicarbonate is a slightly alkaline salt formed by sodium and bicarbonate ions. This mineral salt is normally found in nature, for example, dissolved in spring water. However, the most common way we consume it is in this White odorless and non-flammable powder that we can find in any supermarket or pharmacy.

Perhaps you have heard the popular wisdom that the famous brand of soft drinks “7 up” helps relieve stomach problems, and it is not a coincidence since supposedly its original formula had the ability to raise our pH above when it comes to removing the feeling of heartburn and this is why 7 up can supposedly raise our pH to make it alkaline and avoid this acidity and I say supposedly because the soda formulas have changed and it is currently proven that they are very far from that.

We have to understand that the pH levels in our body are different according to each organ or each part of the human body, for example, Our blood has a pH of approximately 7.4 While the acid found in our stomach has a pH of 1 to 3, that is, it is very acidic and it is logical that this is the case because its function is to break down the food that enters the digestive system.

Curiously, the pH of our body is strictly regulated which guarantees its correct functioning and this regulation is known as acid-base balance and is regulated mainly by our kidneys and our lungs, however, certain health conditions and certain external factors can alter this balance and one of these factors is high intensity exercise, also known as anaerobic exercise.

It happens that, during anaerobic exercise, during very high intensity exercise, the demand for oxygen by our body is very high to the point that it exceeds the capacity we have to take in oxygen from the environment and be able to process it as a result of This is why our muscles at that moment cannot depend exclusively on the oxygen that we can give them to produce energy and this is why when we increase the intensity of the exercise our muscles are forced to change the way in which they produce energy, going from an aerobic way to a anaerobic pathway.
