The importance of balancing Omega 3 and Omega 6

In general, Omega 6s are believed to be inflammatory and Omega 3s are anti-inflammatory. But be careful, because this is not quite like that, it is a little more complex and we are going to try to explain it.

It turns out that our liver is capable of manufacturing almost all the fatty acid chains we need, except two: alpha linoleic acid, also known as ALA, which is an Omega 3 fatty acid, and linoleic acid or LA, which is an Omega 6 fatty.

Once in our body, LA, which is this Omega 6 acid, is transformed into a longer chain acid, which is araquinodic acid, which is very important because it is a precursor to several eicosanoids, which are molecules that regulate our inflammation.

And not all, but most of these ecosanoids derived from Omega 6 are inflammatory. But this does not mean that they are harmful, since they are also responsible for activating cell growth, controlling our blood pressure and blood flow to tissues, and our perception of pain.

On the other hand, ALA, which is Omega 3, is also essential. But by itself it is useless for our body. Before we can use it, our body needs to convert it into other acids and with them our body also manufactures ecosanoids, but in this case they have anti-inflammatory or neutral effects.

And here we are understanding where the tip of the ball is. And in reality inflammation depends on the proportion between Omega 3 and Omega 6, and the reason is that these fatty acids compete with each other for the same reserves of enzymes to be able to manufacture their eicosanoids, and this is why if we do not consume the Sufficient amounts of Omega 3, Omega 6 deplete these enzymes and therefore our body cannot produce anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.

The importance of balancing Omega 3 and Omega 6
