Este domingo culminó una de las mejores ediciones del Mutua Madrid Open, el segundo torneo Masters 1000 sobre arcilla y el de mayor relevancia en España; desde que vi el cuadro inicial y como se iban acomodando las cosas durante cada etapa del torneo, percibí la gran oportunidad para Carlos Alcaraz, desde el punto de vista de su preparación personal como atleta y como un top ten establecido; sobre todo en las fases decisivas donde se le presentó lo más difícil para cualquier tenista, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic y Alexander Zverev.

This Sunday culminated one of the best editions of the Mutua Madrid Open, the second Masters 1000 tournament on clay and the most important in Spain; since I saw the initial draw and how things were settling during each stage of the tournament, I perceived the great opportunity for Carlos Alcaraz, from the point of view of his personal preparation as an athlete and as an established top ten; especially in the decisive phases where he was presented with the most difficult for any tennis player, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.

Pero en los cuartos de final, comenzó otro torneo para Carlos, primero enfrentando a Rafael Nadal, su ídolo de la infancia y a quienes dediqué mi anterior publicación; pero luego de esta hazaña personal para el nacido en El Palmar, se venía el duelo más esperado de todo el mundo tenístico, que vería a Alcaraz enfrentar al número 1 más sólido de la historia, como lo es el serbio Novak Djokovic. En mi opinión, este partido representaba el mayor reto para Carlos y la oportunidad de oro para medir su máximo nivel de juego.

El partido no pudo ser de otra manera, sino una verdadera batalla de altísimo nivel; así se esperaba y pudimos ver a un Carlos siendo exigido por el gran competidor que es Nokav. A diferencia de Nadal, Nole comenzó la gira sobre tierra batida en Montecarlo hace casi un mes; y luego llegó a la final en Belgrado, es decir, ha tenido más tiempo para atemperarse y mejorar su pulso (va cada vez mejor) en la búsqueda de su nivel habitual de juego. Por eso no me pareció casual que Nole, haya entrenado precisamente con Carlitos, previo al inicio en Madrid.

El encuentro con Djokovic ha sido en mi opinión, el más exigente para Alcaraz, pero en estos momentos ya Carlitos ha venido quemando etapas y corregido muchos detalles para perfeccionar su potente juego; incluso ha mejorado la administración de sus recursos técnicos y físicos (ya no corre desbordado a todas pelotas) sino que se ha ido plantando mejor en la pista y ni hablar de la mentalidad ganadora que exhibe. Estas características también son plenamente dominadas por Novak, pero el serbio ya lleva casi 20 años en el circuito, mientras que Carlos apenas está comenzando (tres años).

Los detalles del partido con Nole son impresionantes, me parecía muy difícil que un atleta le jugara de tú a tú, luchando parqa establecer su ritmo y robarle la iniciativa; esto lo hicieron ambos desde el inicio con Carlos convertido en muralla defensiva y luego en una máquina de ataque. El serbio no se guardó nada y arrancó con todo su poderío, a sabiendas que tenía frente a sí, al más claro aspirante para arrebatarse el trono. Fueron los pequeños detalles, los que inclinaron la balanza en favor del balcánico, para adjudicarse el primer set en el tie break 7 - 6 (5).

Fueron 62 minutos de alta competencia, con ambos tenistas buscando imponer su ritmo, pero cuando Carlos comenzó a ser más rápido, Novak aplicó el libreto de Rafa, al jugarle lifteado para contenerle un poco y hacerle caer en algunas trampas estratégicas del veterano jugador serbio. Carlitos estuvo implacable con su revés cruzado y su drop shot, aunque Novak eventualmente le respondió muy bien al juego corto. Ya en la segunda manga, Alcaraz ávido de puntos, se lanzó hacia la red y allí es igual de letal (quizás más jajaja).

Alcaraz se daba el lujo de devolverle el juego lifteado a Novak y luego lo dejaba sin reacción con sus dejadas cortas; la verdad es que jugarle a Novak de esa manera es casi imposible para cualquier otro tenista; lejos de manifestar nerviosismo, Carlitos exhibió soltura, solidez y velocidad; con un break espectacular al doceavo game, logró cerrar con 7 - 5 para igualar y decidir en la tercera vuelta. Djokovic también usó su arsenal se tiros paralelos, subió a la red para recuperar puntos vitales y echó mano de su fuerte servicio, para mantenerse a la par de su joven rival.

Carlitos tenía respuesta para cada intención de Nole, los tiros cortos, su revés paralelo, su drive abierto cruzado, bolas a la línea de fondo; en fín para todo había una devolución fuerte y precisa de Carlos, que volvió a llevar al extremos del tie break a Novak, pero esta vez cerrando al tercer golpe, con un forehand en paralelo incontestable. Fueron 3 horas con 35 minutos de intensa acción tenística. Así pasó Alcaraz a la final del evento, para enfrenar a un jugador que también le había ganado en sus dos choques previos y también era el campeón defensor del título madrileño, Alexander Zverev.

El murciano no podía tener una mejor oportunidad y un mejor escenario, para medirse contra Sascha en estos momentos de gran nivel; en mi opinión fue la final perfecta, ante el rival ideal para él; Sascha venía de una gran racha, superando a Marin Cilic, Féliz Auger-Aliassime y Stéfanos Tsitsipás; sin embargo el alemán tendría a un rival de otra talla y que ha evolucionado en muy poco tiempo. Desde el primer game vi como Carlitos descifraba el camino, con sus primeros drop shots que pusieron a temblar las piernas del espigado Zverev.

The Murcian could not have a better opportunity and a better scenario, to measure himself against Sascha in these moments of great level; in my opinion it was the perfect final, against the ideal opponent for him; Sascha was coming from a great streak, beating Marin Cilic, Féliz Auger-Aliassime and Stéfanos Tsitsipás; however the German would have an opponent of another size and who has evolved in a very short time. From the first game I saw how Carlitos deciphered the way, with his first drop shots that made the legs of the lanky Zverev tremble.

El cuarto y quinto game fueron contundentes para Carlos, primero sosteniendo en cero y luego quebrando con igual marcador. Los tiros rápidos de Sascha no representaron ninguna dificultad para el español, así que no parecía tener más armas que esa. Carlos obtuvo con facilidad el 6 - 3 en 31 solo minutos y apenas parecía calentar motores. El joven de 19 años estaba dominando al número 3 del ranking a placer; incluso haciendo el tan conocido juego del gato y el ratón; poniendo a bailar a Zverev a su ritmo. tres quiebres al tgercer, quinto y séptimo games, sellaron la victoria en solo 62 minutos de partido.

Toma así Carlitos una dulce revancha ante el alemán, que sencillamente no supo qué hacer, se rascaba la cabeza como confundido jaja; de hecho el último game Sascha entregó el partido con dos dobles faltas, como prueba de su desconcierto en el court. Alcaraz alcanza así, su quinto titulo en cinco finales disputadas; dejando un impresionante balance personal de 28 triunfos y solo 3 reveses en lo que va de año, ascendiendo del noveno al sexto puesto del ranking mundial; Alcaraz es una máquina tenística y fogearse con Nadal y Novak, le ha elevado a otro nivel; quizás ya sea invencible a tan corta edad; una historia de ensueño para él y para los amantes del tenis.

The fourth and fifth games were convincing for Carlos, first holding at zero and then breaking with the same score. Sascha's fast shots did not represent any difficulty for the Spaniard, so he did not seem to have more weapons than that. Carlos easily took 6 - 3 in just 31 minutes and hardly seemed to be warming up. The 19 year old was dominating the number 3 in the ranking at will; even playing the well-known cat and mouse game; making Zverev dance to his rhythm. Three breaks in the third, fifth and seventh games, sealed the victory in only 62 minutes of the match.

Carlitos takes a sweet revenge against the German, who simply did not know what to do, scratching his head as if confused haha; in fact the last game Sascha gave the match away with two double faults, as proof of his bewilderment on the court. Alcaraz thus reaches his fifth title in five finals played; leaving an impressive personal balance of 28 wins and only 3 setbacks so far this year, rising from ninth to sixth place in the world ranking; Alcaraz is a tennis machine and getting on fire with Nadal and Novak, has elevated him to another level; perhaps he is already invincible at such a young age; a dream story for him and for tennis lovers.
