Semifinales de lujo en el US Open. [Esp-Eng]

El graderío del Arthur Ashe Stadium se ha mantenido a lleno total, durante los compromisos más interesantes de esta edición del US Open; y vaya que eso no es algo sencillo. Pero es que la fanaticada se ha dado todo un banquete durante estas dos semanas, con partidos sorpresivos, remontadas, maratones, el retiro de Serena Williams, la final femenina de hoy, bien ganada por Iga Swiatek y por supuesto, la clasificación de Carlos Alcaraz, a la gran final del día de mañana.

The stands of the Arthur Ashe Stadium have remained at full capacity during the most interesting matches of this edition of the US Open; and that is not an easy thing to do. But the fans have had a feast during these two weeks, with surprising matches, comebacks, marathons, Serena Williams' retirement, today's women's final, well won by Iga Swiatek and of course, Carlos Alcaraz's qualification to tomorrow's final.

No obstante, las semifinales de la modalidad masculina han acaparado mi atención, primero por todo lo que significaba la presencia del último estadounidense en competencia, Frances Tiafoe; a quien compararon con el histórico afroamericano, cuyo nombre fue inmortalizado en el mítico escenario de la pista central (Arthur Ashe). Si los cuartos de final estuvieron a la altura del compromiso, las semifinales de ayer no se han quedado atrás.

However, the semifinals of the men's category have captured my attention, first of all because of the presence of the last American in competition, Frances Tiafoe, who was compared to the historic African-American, whose name was immortalized in the mythical stage of the center court (Arthur Ashe). If the quarterfinals were at the height of the commitment, yesterday's semifinals were not far behind.

A primera hora saltaron a la pista, el ruso Karen Kachanov y el noruego Casper Ruud, un partido interesante para ver lo que traen este par de atletas que en mi opinión, han tenido poca cobertura noticiosa; pero en realidad me gustó mucho lo demostrado por Casper, un jugador que ha logrado diversificar su juego, para hacerse un lugar entre los más grandes de esta temporada. Luego de un primer set muy reñido, logró concretar en el tie break.

First thing in the morning, the Russian Karen Kachanov and the Norwegian Casper Ruud took the court, an interesting match to see what this pair of athletes bring, who in my opinion, have had little news coverage; but I really liked what Casper showed, a player who has managed to diversify his game, to make a place among the greatest of this season. After a very close first set, he was able to clinch it in the tie break.

Pero en la segunda manga, el noruego pudo tomar el pulso del encuentro para lograr maniatar a su espigado rival con un categórico 6-2; Karen maquillaría con el 7-5 en el tercero, pero el cuarto set sería el definitivo con otro 6-2 que detenía el reloj en 3 horas exactas. Llegando así Casper, a su segunda final de GS de su carrera, en el mismo año. Aunque lo más importante, según mi óptica, es la manera como llega, imponiendo su ritmo en todo momento y logrando, en 5 de sus 6 partidos, terminar antes del 5to set.

But in the second set, the Norwegian was able to take the pulse of the match to manage to hold his lanky rival with a categorical 6-2; Karen would make up with the 7-5 in the third, but the fourth set would be the definitive with another 6-2 that stopped the clock in exactly 3 hours. Thus Casper reached his second GS final of his career, in the same year. Although the most important thing, according to my point of view, is the way he arrives, imposing his rhythm at all times and managing, in 5 of his 6 matches, to finish before the 5th set.

Sin embargo, uno de los aspectos más notables del joven noruego, es su mejoría en el aspecto ofensivo, lo que considero una nueva dimensión de Casper, respecto al nivel que ha venido desarrollando desde el año pasado. A pesar de haber reeditado solo uno de sus 5 títulos consecutivos sobre arcilla (Gstaad), Ruud logró jugar las finales en Ginebra y Roland Garros, algo que le suma una valiosa experiencia, para asumir el reto de enfrentar a Carlitos por 3ra vez en su carrera.

However, one of the most remarkable aspects of the young Norwegian is his improvement in the offensive aspect, which I consider a new dimension of Casper, with respect to the level he has been developing since last year. Despite having reedited only one of his 5 consecutive titles on clay (Gstaad), Ruud managed to play the finals in Geneva and Roland Garros, something that gives him valuable experience to take on the challenge of facing Carlitos for the 3rd time in his career.

Luego de ver el nombre de Ruud en la final, se venía la batalla más esperada de esta fase, yo diría que los mejores tenistas en condición atlética del torneo; dada su demostración de velocidad de desplazamiento y la fortaleza con la que han estado golpeando la pelota en sus últimos partidos. También era una batalla de resistencia física, ya que ambos han estado mucho tiempo en la pista; Carlitos con tres encuentros seguidos a 5 sets y Frances con 7 tie breaks disputados ¡Válgame Dios!

After seeing Ruud's name in the final, it was the most anticipated battle of this phase, I would say the best tennis players in athletic condition of the tournament; given their demonstration of speed of movement and the strength with which they have been hitting the ball in their last matches. It was also a battle of physical endurance, as both have been on the court for a long time; Carlitos with three straight 5-set matches and Frances with 7 tie breaks played, God forbid!

Con la promesa de un gran partido, inició la contienda de tenis agresivo, ambos con su habitual planteamiento frontal y hacia adelante; mis primeras impresiones fueron la mejor ejecución desde el revés para el español, que lograba acertar más su backhand angulado, mientras que Tiafoe era más lanzado hacia el paralelo. Los resultados eran positivos para los dos, pero Carlos estaba utilizando mejor su repertorio combinado. El drop shot no se hizo esperar y Frances llegaba, pero con poco balance.

With the promise of a great match, the aggressive tennis contest began, both with their usual forward and frontal approach; my first impressions were the better execution from the backhand for the Spaniard, who was able to hit more of his angled backhand, while Tiafoe was more thrown towards the parallel. The results were positive for both, but Carlos was using his combined repertoire better. The drop shot was not long in coming and Frances arrived, but with little balance.

Y si el estadounidense superaba en aceleración de pelota, Alcaraz lo hacía en diversidad de técnicas y en mayor presencia hacia cada rincón de la pista; y aunque hubo la espectacularidad prevista en ese primer set, la definición vino con una inoportuna doble falta de Carlitos, que luego de acertar 4 puntos seguidos, inclinaba ese tie break en favor de "Big Foe" en 64 minutos. Pero en las siguientes mangas, se desenfrenó el dominio pleno del murciano. Con mejor bloqueo sobre la red y usando su volea cortada.

And if the American surpassed in ball acceleration, Alcaraz did it in diversity of techniques and greater presence in every corner of the court; and although there was the expected spectacularity in that first set, the definition came with an untimely double fault of Carlitos, who after hitting 4 points in a row, tilted that tie break in favor of "Big Foe" in 64 minutes. But in the following sets, the full control of the Murcian was unbridled. With better blocking on the net and using his cut volley.

En este caso, no abundaré en los detalles del segundo y tercer set ganados por Carlos, más allá de exaltar la increíble velocidad con la que el español, se recomponía luego de defender los tiros difíciles. Es decir, casi se tiraba de cabeza y en cuestión de segundos, ya estaba de regreso en la defensa y también al ataque; aunque esta exhibición tan extrema, puede afectar su físico a largo plazo y acortar su prometedora carrera con alguna lesión (igual al año pasado en NY), cuando sufrió un desgarro en el muslo derecho.

In this case, I will not dwell on the details of the second and third sets won by Carlos, beyond exalting the incredible speed with which the Spaniard, recomposed himself after defending difficult shots. That is to say, he almost threw himself on his head and in a matter of seconds, he was already back on defense and also attacking; although this extreme exhibition may affect his physical condition in the long term and shorten his promising career with an injury (just like last year in NY), when he suffered a tear in his right thigh.

En la cuarta vuelta, Frances pudo sobrevivir "in extremis", luego de estar cabizbajo y con break abajo, incluso logró salvar un "Match Point" de infarto, pero se repuso y pudo sacar un esfuerzo extra para superar otro tie break (8vo en el torneo) y así regalarnos un quinto set, que hacía justicia al momento deportivo que estaba observando desde mi teléfono vía streaming; en el que ninguno daba una bola por perdida, enalteciendo el espíritu deportivo en la mayor competencia de esta etapa del año.

In the fourth round, Frances was able to survive "in extremis", after being down a break, and even managed to save a "Match Point" of heart attack, but he recovered and was able to make an extra effort to overcome another tie break (8th in the tournament) and thus give us a fifth set, which did justice to the sporting moment I was watching from my phone via streaming; in which no one gave a ball for lost, exalting the sportsmanship in the biggest competition of this stage of the year.

Lamentablemente debía haber un solo ganador, aunque Tiafoe fue más efectivo con su servicio, Alcaraz era más solvente con su juego de intercambios rápidos. Carlitos fue más efectivo y cuando se vio con break abajo en el 4to game, no solo recuperó el quiebre, sino que hizo uso del pulso de cirujano para colocar globos sobre la línea de fondo; algo para lo que Tiafoe no tuvo respuesta alguna. Rompió al 5to y 9no para detener el reloj en 4 horas y 19 minutos. Era inevitable para Frances y Carlitos estaba en la final.

Unfortunately there should have been only one winner, although Tiafoe was more effective with his serve, Alcaraz was more solvent with his quick exchanges. Carlitos was more effective and when he was down by a break in the 4th game, he not only recovered the break, but also used his surgeon's pulse to place lobs over the baseline; something for which Tiafoe had no answer. He broke at the 5th and 9th to stop the clock at 4 hours and 19 minutes. It was inevitable for Frances and Carlitos was in the final.

Este será el tercer encuentro entre Carlos y Casper, con Alcaraz arriba 2-0 en el duelo personal y con ambos muchachos jugando la posibilidad de acceder al número 1 del ranking mundial. Es algo que va más allá del Grand Slam en sí, es una especie de doble trofeo en el que el ganador se lleva todo. El noruego parece estar mejor preparado que en sus choques previos, está golpeando mejor la pelota con muy buen efecto de spin y ampliando su visión de ataque. ¿Será la vencida a la tercera para Ruud? ¿Será el salto definitivo para Carlos? Esta tarde lo sabremos en la final entre jóvenes del US Open.

This will be the third meeting between Carlos and Casper, with Alcaraz up 2-0 in the personal duel and with both boys playing for the chance to reach the number 1 ranking in the world. It's something that goes beyond the Grand Slam itself, it's a sort of winner-take-all double trophy. The Norwegian seems to be better prepared than in his previous clashes, he is hitting the ball better with very good spin and expanding his attacking vision. Will it be the third time lucky for Ruud? Will it be the definitive leap for Carlos? We will find out this afternoon in the final between young players at the US Open.
