Hikaru Nakamura in his YT-channel and others have indicated that Hans had been cheating, but with no evidence other than some videos of Niemann after the games where he had confused some lines. Also Hans in the past had cheated on chess.com, like some say.
Cheating overboard? That would be interesting to investigate.

Technology improves faster than one thinks. Devices get smaller and smaller. And players do go to restrooms, etc.
And those radiation or signal scanners used by the security to check the players at entrance were probably bought at Walmart for 20$.
So there are ways, if one really wants. Question is, if it is worth to ruin a promising career, if found out. After spending so much time on chess like those high-level players, I would say no! Therefore the theory with the prep leak seems more likely. Or that Magnus just had a bad day (but unlikely after his convincing victory against Nepo).
