My first quick getaway with Citykleta

Said it in my post yesterday — heading to the Saturday workout this project sets up for groups, with routes of different levels around the city. I picked Cojímar.

It turns out that one of the members of the group is an actor in the Cuban soap opera Ojo de Agua, which is currently being broadcast. His name is Hamlet Paredes in real life. I found out while talking with them, because I don’t watch TV, let alone soap operas. When my sister saw the photos I sent her, she immediately said: “Anaray, that’s the actor!” Hahaha… Well, this is just a colourful note and to mention that he is the author of these two photos.

I had to split the route into three parts, otherwise connectivity issues might have caused me to lose the overall progress. That way I made sure to have all the data I’m sharing with you here. 😄

$1 $1 $1 $1

I asked Copilot to share its opinion about this ride in which I had to make a great effort to keep up with the group. This is what it told me:

✅ Positive
• Great anaerobic stimulus: those 44 minutes in the high zone give you power, lactate tolerance, and the ability to sustain strong paces.
• Good balance with aerobic: 37 minutes in the aerobic zone ensure it wasn’t all “flat out”, which protects your endurance base.
• Variety of speeds: moving between 17 and 32 km/h shows your body responds well both in sustained and explosive sections.
⚠️ To consider
• Heavy load: so much time in anaerobic can be very demanding on the cardiovascular and muscular systems. If repeated too often, it may cause accumulated fatigue.
• Little active recovery: only 2 minutes in the light zone indicate you hardly gave your body space to loosen up and regenerate during the ride.

$1 $1 $1 $1

The details are similar to those in the first part. What did change, however, was the route back to Vedado, where we all met up (those of us who made it) at the El Lolo café, as we cycled along the Malecón.

$1 $1 $1

This was the return home. The road‑rider you can see in the video lives in my municipality. He accompanied me back, so I stayed within those ranges to keep a good pace with him. For me it was demanding, for him it was a relaxed and fun Saturday ride.

The wrap‑up

Got home knackered, had a nice bath, grabbed some food, and replied to a few Hive comments. Then straight to bed — slept like a baby! Not tired today, but I know I’ve got to let my body soak up all that effort. Maybe I’ll try these tough rides once a week, and hey, maybe the stats will get better over time.

⚠️ A considerar

😅😂 Yeah, right! Imagine that – I only found out because everyone was going on about the psychologist in the soap opera, saying this and that. And I asked, feeling a bit embarrassed, what on earth they were talking about...

Lol, hanging out with someone famous and not realizing who he is, that could totally be me as well 😂

Well done, these groups are perfect for you! In my opinion the 'active recovery' GPT was talking about is nonsense... you can rest once your home 😆

'active recovery'

I reckon I get what Copilot’s saying. I’m a cycle tourist, not a racer, haha… my rides should be geared more towards stamina than blasting along fast. These AIs really get to know you, haha. Picture me handing over all my stuff for it to translate! 😆

Yes it knows you well!

But still, going fast is too much fun, ai can't know that 🤣

going fast is too much fun

You know? I quite like it in a way, but I wouldn’t want to lose control and fall off the bike. In the video you can see what the streets are like — I can’t be riding along and suddenly have a hole appear right in front of me.

On that route towards Cojímar there are many climbs. On one of them, except for the lad ahead of me in the video, the one who spoke and said “let’s take it easy, enjoying the hill”, and the other who was on the road bike, plus me, the rest got off. They couldn’t make it up. And just as there were climbs, afterwards there were descents — very thrilling but also quite dangerous.

Ah, I’m writing the post for the initiative… I’ll publish it in a moment. 😉

Well done! Nice ride! And even with a celebrity 😂

For me it was demanding, for him it was a relaxed and fun Saturday ride.

That is the difficult thing about group rides. People have a different level of fitness, so for some it is more intense than for others.
I have that as well when I go for a group ride. Mostly it is me that is struggling.
Tips: Try to stay out of the wind. Position yourself behind someone when riding. The closer you are behind someone, the better.
And if you are cycling 'in the red' for a long time, just ask the group to slow down a bit. Don't be ashamed to ask. You'd be more ashamed when you can't go any further because you've gone over your limit.

By the way, I have quite a long recovery time from yesterdays ride as well... 90 hours 😂
Blog post is in the making 😉

Hi, yes. I’ll follow your advice — it sounds really good to me.

The thing with those rides is that they don’t plan them on the same day, but throughout the week. The idea was to meet in that park on H and 21 in Vedado on Saturday before 3 p.m., because at exactly 3 they leave for the planned destination. They don’t take the wind into account, haha… I think the wind is the real coach.
In fact, to get from my house to that park I took an avenue, Boyeros, which is a fast road. There are no climbs until a bit before arriving, but the whole time there was a strong headwind. I had no way to measure it — I wish I had. And to top it off, I was racing against the clock, because they don’t wait. They have English punctuality. They leave at 3 on the dot, without waiting for anyone who hasn’t reached the meeting point.

From that park onwards, heading to Cojímar, it was another battle against the wind and along streets that weren’t in great condition. We even went through another municipality called Regla. And there were some climbs as well. 😶

Does your Garmin tell you when to rest and for how long? I have no way of knowing, so I just follow my intuition and the signs of my body. I rested yesterday and today, so tomorrow I’ll be ready to go out on the bike again.
