My Actifit Report Card: March 25 2024
The weekend has been glorious with blue skies pretty much constant throughout the whole two days. Nice to see shadows and soon they’ll get shorter as the sun sits higher in the sky.
We took a walk up onto “the ridge” as we call it from which great views can be enjoyed for miles around. The birdsong has intensified as Spring approaches. Nesting birds and the crows are building them high; a sign of a good summer my grandmother used to say.
The green buds are rapidly making their way into the world.
We spotted Skylarks on the path, that then scurried and flitted, up and down into the air before parachuting back into their furrows, to rest for the night.
I worry about them, foxes are one thing but the Red Kites might also have their easy pickings. Talking of which, not one but two landed in our garden yesterday and before I could grab the camera, made themselves scarce. I was amazed, as that’s never happened before.
What’s more they’re building bloody football pitches on this land which we opposed. However they have toned the plans down and there will be no floodlights. I believe it will now be just the one. Will we hear the rise and fall song of the lark for much longer?

Beautiful scenery. Especially the sky is clear and the air is good, hope your health will improve.
It is a great area here, good mix of the nearby town and still plenty of green space. I’m convinced this is the ideal tonic for all ills!!

I've never had a kite land in the garden that I've seen, but they do swoop over here. Had some sparrowhawks. We need to preserve some wild land for these creatures.

Haven’t seen a sparrowhawk in awhile but did see a Kestrel fly into a nearby tree around two weeks ago.
To be fair, although unhappy about the meadows between our village and the next being turned into pitches, the land is old Reading university property that was originally designated for dairy research after WWII and remained as such for decades. Our house is built on part of that land but large tracts of space were left as they were and a network of pathways laid out. Many people now use this space for recreational purposes but a lot of the green space is very wild and beautiful with it. We went to an open day run by the University that outlined their plans for the spaces and some of it was good and some ill conceived by many. You can’t please everybody. However we did talk to their wildlife planner who put our minds mostly to rest on their plans for maintaining the natural status quo.
