Hola, querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.

After the obligatory weekend rest, I have tried to resume my chores as normal, general cleaning included. I'm such a square person that I've prepared a list of each room and piece of furniture or element to be tackled, to keep track and have an objective reference of the progress of the task. It seems silly, but the pleasure of crossing off the boxes of what I have finished is a stimulus to continue.

On the shelf I organised in the morning were the stamp albums I show in the photo collage. They are the kind of things that you know are worth less than you imagine, although I keep hoping that among the hundreds of stamps there will be a hidden diamond. Humm... I'll look into it!

Stoic quote of the day

If you have conceived the idea of something that pleases you, keep yourself from being dragged away by it; rather let the matter wait and take a space of time. Then think of both the time when you enjoyed the pleasure, and the time, after the pleasure, when you will regret it and reproach yourself. In the face of this, imagine the vision of how you will rejoice if you succeed in abstaining from pleasure and how satisfied you will feel with yourself.

Epictetus.

My reflection

The teaching that Epictetus brings us today is one of the most practical I have encountered in Stoic philosophy. The simple act of delaying moments of pleasure, rather than forbidding them, causes the desire to diminish and the desire to fulfil it to disappear. Since it is you yourself who makes the decision, convinced of its wisdom, the chances of fulfilment are high.

The clearest example in which I have applied it was quitting smoking. For a few weeks I prepared myself for when the time came. I was surprised to find that I was able to reduce my cigarette consumption by almost half just by postponing the moment to light up until ten minutes later. When the timer I set on my mobile phone finished counting down, my mind was already absorbed in some task and I didn't find it worthwhile to cut the flow of activity.

It's funny how easy it seems to me now when I think back on it. It wasn't. The brain plays tricks on us and only with conscious work on our thoughts and emotions can we aspire to master it, at least in part. I now apply this technique whenever a whim is put in front of me. I don't reject it, but I analyse whether it is really worth the investment, be it in time, effort or money. I postpone the moment to take action. And most of the time I don't take action because I realise that I don't need to.

Logbook of the day

In the morning: housework and content curation.

In the afternoon: reading blog articles, a bit of tablet gaming and then various Hive-related tasks. I finished the day with a walk with the puppy.
