Hola, querido hiver.

Volvemos a respirar. Esta noche el viento ha cambiado a componente norte y eso nos ha traído frescor y alivio. Por fin. He vuelto a taparme con las sábanas, algo que me ayuda a conciliar mejor el sueño. Así, sí.

En otro orden de cosas, llevo unas semanas sintiendo que hay como una corriente de fondo en Hive. No sé, llámalo pálpito o presentimiento. Han aparecido nombres nuevos que transmiten una energía diferente y positiva. Veo acercamientos entre unos y otros, lo contrario también, y me mantengo expectante pero reconfortada porque me identifico con ese aire de respeto, tolerancia y ayuda al prójimo que se respira. Ojalá así sea, porque supondrá beneficio para todos.

He naufragado antes de subir a la nave: cómo ha sucedido no te lo cuento, para que no pienses que haya que incluir esta frase entre las paradojas de los estoicos, de las que ninguna es falsa, ni tan sorprendente como a primera vista parece; te lo demostraré cuando quieras, es más, aunque no lo quieras.

Mi reflexión

Séneca es el filósofo que más enseñanzas sobre la necesidad de ser pragmáticos nos deja. En esta ocasión, se refiere a lo que los estoicos llamaban praemeditatio malorum. Consiste en anticiparnos a la adversidad, imaginarnos que la tenemos delante y de ese modo establecer una especie de plan de acción que seguir si ese momento llegara.

Sí, ya sé que esto puede parecer que son ganas de sufrir con antelación ante algo que puede que jamás se produzca. Es similar a lo que experimentamos cuando nos invade la ansiedad. Sin embargo, según mi experiencia al menos, no es lo mismo.

En el caso de la ansiedad, esta llega a nosotros de forma inconsciente. Los pensamientos catastróficos se encadenan unos a otros en una espiral que termina por dominarte la mente. En esos instantes nuestro foco está en el sufrimiento, en la angustia, lo pasamos mal y nos desesperamos.

En cambio, la anticipación que nos sugiere Séneca se trata de una imaginación consciente. Somos nosotros quienes inducimos a nuestra mente a que se ponga en las situaciones negativas y quienes buscamos de forma activa las diferentes posibilidades que pueden surgir. Como si fuéramos un detective en busca de pistas para resolver un misterio, nuestro foco no está en nosotros mismos y en lo mal que lo pasamos, sino en abrir el abanico de oportunidades y, por tanto, en la resolución de los posibles problemas.

Es curioso cómo he practicado esta técnica estoica sin saberlo durante años. Yo lo he llamado siempre hacer de abogada del diablo, pues ante cualquier idea me ha gustado estar prevenida de los obstáculos futuros y es probable que otros hayan pensado que soy una ceniza. Me da igual. Ahora sé que esa es una fuerza especial que tengo, que me protege y me ayuda tanto en el mañana como en el presente.

We are breathing again. Tonight the wind has changed to a northerly wind and that has brought us freshness and relief. At last. I'm back under the covers, something that helps me sleep better. Like this, yes.

On another note, I've been feeling for a few weeks now that there's a kind of undercurrent in Hive. I don't know, call it a hunch or a feeling. New names have appeared that transmit a different and positive energy. I see rapprochement between some and others, the opposite too, and I remain expectant but comforted because I identify with the air of respect, tolerance and help for others that is in the air. Let's hope so, because it will benefit everyone.

My reflection

Seneca is the philosopher who teaches us most about the need to be pragmatic. On this occasion, he refers to what the Stoics called praemeditatio malorum. It consists of anticipating adversity, imagining that it is ahead of us and thus establishing a kind of plan of action to follow if that moment should come.

Yes, I know that this may seem like a desire to suffer in anticipation of something that may never happen. It is similar to what we experience when we are overcome by anxiety. However, in my experience at least, it is not the same.

In the case of anxiety, it comes to us unconsciously. Catastrophic thoughts are chained together in a spiral that eventually dominates your mind. In those moments our focus is on the suffering, on the anguish, we have a bad time and we despair.

On the other hand, the anticipation suggested by Seneca is a conscious imagination. It is we who induce our mind to place itself in the negative situations and who actively search for the different possibilities that may arise. As if we were a detective looking for clues to solve a mystery, our focus is not on ourselves and how bad we have it, but on opening up the range of opportunities and thus on the resolution of possible problems.

It's funny how I have unknowingly practised this stoic technique for years. I have always called it playing the devil's advocate, as I have always liked to be forewarned of future obstacles and others have probably thought I am an ash. I don't care. Now I know that this is a special strength that I have, that protects me and helps me in the future as well as in the present.

We all like to prepare our minds for adversity even tho most times we exaggerated the shipwreck than it might actually turn out. But preparing beforehand always helps relieve the stress of the unknown until we eventually face them.

I believe we are all capable of solving all our problems, if we see ourselves as capable beings decisive enough to decipher them.
