Zagreb Advent - My Actifit Report Card: January 6 2023

Today was very nice day with nice weather. So I tried to make it an eventful day.

This weekend is marked as the end of Christmas Advent in Zagreb. If you didn't know, Zagreb took the title of the most beautiful Advent in Europe few years ago and it's living to that name ever since.

Every year wife and I take our kids to city centre to enjoy the festivities, and this year we were super busy and didn't have a chance to go. So I took my kids there today (kid number 1, 2 and 3 - younger 2 stayed at home with the wifey) before it was too late.

We started with a short but sweet ride on Zagreb's legendary Funicular (in Croatian called "Uspinjača") that took us to Upper Town (Croatian: "Gornji grad"). Kids really enjoy it even though the ride takes less then 2 minutes.

When you get out of the ride you find yourself at the footing of the Lotršćak Tower, where the legendary Grič cannon (Croatian "Grički top") is located. It's the place of one of the best viewpoints of the Zagreb town centre.

After that it's a short walk to the Saint Mark's Church in the St. Mark's Square, with iconic rooftop as one of the oldest and most recognized architectural monuments in Zagreb.

Btw, fun fact - the square is also the place of "Banski dvori" (the seat of the Government of Croatia), Croatian Parliament and Constitutional Court of Croatia. 👎👎👎
It's a shame that such a beautiful monument is often associated with politics and protests.

Few hundred meters downhill is a place called Stone Gate (Croatian: "Kamenita Vrata") - it's one of the best preserved monuments of old Zagreb. It is a building shaped like a rectangular tower with a vehicular passage in which you can find a small chapel.

When you go through the passage you find yourself in a plateau that gets beautifully decorated during the Advent. The place gets filled with big food&drink stands and is a host to many parties during the holidays.

Originally, this place is best known for a perfect viewpoint on Zagreb Cathedral, second tallest building in Croatian and one the most recognized monuments in Zagreb and Croatia.

We spent some time there, took a few photos and after that headed down the central city's square called Ban Jelačić Square.

It was getting a bit cold and kids were a bit tired so we sat down for some cake and coffee (kids ate the cake I drank coffee - no cake for me, got to get fit again).

We headed back to our car but we had to make one last stop - at Croatian National Theatre (Croatian: "Hrvatsko Narodno Kazalište", or short - "HNK") which is, every year during holidays, a home of a Nutcracker ballet. After that we called it a day and went home.
