Weekly Training Update
I am slowing things down a little bit with my marathon coming up this week. It has been rainy over the past few days, so I have not been able to get out on the bike which has been a bit annoying. I have really been enjoying the rides lately, as there has been basically no wind, so it has been perfect riding weather.

When it comes to training and racing, one thing I have been doing for a while now is taking my Heart Rate Variability(HRV) every morning. A lot of watches now offer this, but I have been using the HRV4Training app for a while now and have a lot of friends and know quite a few of the professional triathletes that use it. There is a paid subscription to the app, or you can buy the basic features for a one of purchase price. I have chosen that option. The paid subscription apparently helps you with a training plan for your specific sport and will modify the plan if there are any issues with your HRV. For example, if you are not properly rested and you have gotten a bad HRV, it will alter the plan it has for your days training, to take this unrested state into consideration.

So when we talk about HRV, make sure you are not mistaking this with Heart Rate. They are two different pieces of information. Heart Rate(HR) measures the beats per minute and can be used to give an indication of your overall health, but HRV goes into a lot more detail. (From What I Understand), HRV measures the difference in your heart beat while your are breathing. There are very small changes that occur and when you are at peak health, these differences can fluctuate a lot, whereas, when you are stressed or fatigued, these differences are not present, or very small.

Of course, it is not one size fits all and your HRV needs to be measured over a number of days to start giving yourself a guide to how you are feeling. HRV4Training needs at least a week of measurements to give you an estimate on how you should proceed with your training. For example, the image below is from todays measurement, telling me that I can proceed with my training as planned. This could change depending on stress or fatigue and the app may recommend that I reduce the intensity of my training or try to get some more rest. As well, the earlier image shows historical values of my HRV over time, so I can look back to see where I have come.

A very quick introduction, to HRV I know, but if there are any questions, I will be happy to try and help out.
