Crazyhouse Tournament #2 on Hive: @maestroask and @pokerarema were the winners

Dear chess fans,

yesterday a Hivechess fun tournament was played, a 3+2 Crazyhouse arena!
12 players joined the competition, for some of which it was the very first experience with this chess variant! Welcome to @hannes-stoffel, @awesomeintrigue (zackawesome) and @jesustiano to chess on Hive!

Back to business. No surprise that the winner was the only titled player in the field, @maestroask (Odnoobraz_bcm). Best untitled player and second winner was - somewhat unexpected - @pokerarema (ragnarokgame) with a rock solid performance! I landed on rank 3, followed by @rodrook (who demolished me in a game) and also a strong playing @tin.aung.soe. Congrats to All!

2: Do you want to have again a knockout stage in the next season or a "normal" one?

I ask because I feel there are some downsides to a knockout stage which might outweigh the positive aspects.

I love this crazyhouse variant, it could be fun to include a couple of rounds. As to the structure of the tournament, I am not sure tbh.

Thanks for organizing this tournament.

Regarding the questions, I have no special preferences. Chess variants do not replace chess itself, but they are interesting in their own way. If tournaments are held on them, I will play. It's the same with the knockout stage: if there is one, I will play matches, if not, tournaments.

That crazy house mode is actually crazy, haha. So many times my brain broke trying to figure out variations that I made so many silly mistakes while focusing on that part. It was really fun but I have to say @maestroask, please man, go easy on us sometimes, haha.

  1. Sure I'd like to explore other modes too.

  2. I'm not sure what you mean by normal here, never participated before.

Chess960 YES, that is a good training. Crazyhouse NO, it is too crazy and not much useful for training.

2: Do you want to have again a knockout stage in the next season or a "normal" one?

Maybe it would be better to simply split tournament after the qualifying stage into the Top 8 tournament, and the Challengers tournament. Finals should be 4 rounds, Swiss system. But that is only my opinion.

Chess960 is good bc it's a variant of the "normal" game, just pieces in different places so I think it's ok. On the other hand, crazyhouse is way too different, I'd prefer to play it sporadically and not while participating in tournaments.

I'm fine with both tbh.

  1. 960 & Crazy: yes and YES !!!
  2. My concerns about the knockout stage is possible efects on the attendant.
  3. Some wins are hard to come by but I enjoy a win even if it's CRAZY!

My answers to your questions: spicing it up with different variants would be welcomed if it does not take over, a season/league should be focused on chess at its intended format.

The problem with a knockout phase is that some people (including me, hehehe) become pure bystanders pretty fast once that phase is reached so I would prefer normal league mode until the end.
