Don´t miss the final round of the Hivechess Tournament S17 this Friday!

Dear chess fans!

The last round of Season 17 "x4" is played tomorrow, Friday, 23th Feb. 2024, at the usual time.
The current standings after 9 rounds you can find here.

Mode: 5+1 (5 minutes per game, 1 sec. increment), 80 min. arena

Tournament Link: https://lichess.org/tournament/cgWhsxMW

The prize pool contains already app. 513 Hive!

Rules

  • All players are welcome, also newbies, you just need a free Lichess-account and join our team in Lichess here (password is "Hive")!
  • Every Friday is one round.
  • Time mode is varying (5+0, 3+2, 2+1,...), sometimes Swiss, sometimes maybe Chess960 (Fischer Random).
  • The winner of each round gets the number of points equaling the number of players in that round, the second ranked one point less and so forth until the one on the bottom of the table who gets one point (i.e. the Lighteye-scoring). In order to be counted, at least 3 games must have been played.
  • In case two players have the same number of points, the one who played less rounds is first. If that is equal too, then the average tournament performance decides.
  • PAYOUT: The tournament points of the 10 rounds are summed up. 65% of all Hivechess-related post rewards go to the prize pool (PP). Each of the 4 rating-tiered tournament winners will get "x" Hive (at least 10), the runner-up "y" and the third "z" Hive (depending on the no. of players in each group). The rest of the PP is divided among all other players according to the number of tournament points achieved (70%) and the number of rounds played (30%). In order to qualify for a prize you have to participate in at least five of the 10 rounds!
  • There will be a special prize of 5 Hive for the player with the highest tournament performance in relation to his rating.
  • LEO prizes will be funded by @leofinance, detailes to be confirmed
  • If I don´t know your Hive username, you won´t be considered for prices, so please let me know your Hive name in the comments! Community or badge accounts can participate but are not qualified for prices! Only individuals can get prices.

Please share this announcement among your (chess) friends and colleagues!
The more participate, the more fun! And maybe some are even interested to join Hive and it´s Chess Community?

See you on Friday and good luck to all!

Please let me know your preference:

  1. Do you want to keep the tournament split into several skill-based tiers or do you want to have it rather combined again in the next season? Any suggestions to change the tresholds?
  2. Do you want to exclude more players from prices by having a higher minimum number of rounds to be played (currently 5), but those fewer players would get then better prizes, or would you prefer rather less restrictions and less prizes but for a bigger group?
  3. We could withhold a part of the prize pool and transfer it to HBD savings. By this in the long run we will get from the currently app. 21,8% interest (20% plus the compounding effect) an additional, constantly increasing "passive" prizepool to make the prizes even more attractive over time! Any thoughts about this idea?
  4. Who would be interested in a correspondence chess tournament (e.g. 3 days per move)?

The idea of saving some HBD from the prize pool is a good one, would allow to have a growing pool on the ling term

Sadly I could not play this season due to conflicts with my private life schedule. Those things should be resolved until next season and I'm looking forward to participating again. :-)

That being said, here are my thoughts:

  1. I'm torn between yes and no. I like the different "leagues" it takes out the frustrating part of competing against the much higher rated players and yet there are matchups between them. I honestly have no solution yet because I think splitting the tournaments themselves does not yet make sense with only ~30 participants per tournament? Anyway, I like that this is not stuck in a "we've always done things this way" kind of thinking and open to experimentation and over time a solution will be found.

  2. In my opinion it should not be lower than 5. I might even like 6 or 7. Maybe building in a factor starting at 5 rounds with a 50% payout? Below five there's nothing. The factor increasing by 10% per round reaching 100% with 10 rounds? That way people who are more busy still get a reward and those participating (and contributing) in more rounds get higher payout.

  3. Yes, I think that is a great idea. It will result in a cutback at first but considering the long run it will improve things. How about combining it with the factor? Those rewards not being payed due to factoring get transfered into the HBD savings?

Thank you so much for organizing these events.

EDIT:
Addendum to point 2/3:
Just another thought: Starting with 75% at 5 rounds and increasing 5% each additional round looks more appealing to participants while still honoring more participation and putting rewards aside for the hbd savings... If you like the idea in general, fiddle around with the numbers, if you don't like the idea no more thought put in to it :-)

Thanks a lot for your input. Yes, combining 2) and 3) and put the withheld prizes directly in the HBD savings is a great idea. I will work this out in detail and wait for other people´s thoughts!

I am a newbie in HIVE and a chess novice so weight my recommendations accordingly :)

  1. As a novice I like it split, as it gives something to aim for.
  2. maybe we could have two different tournaments for serious players and casual. round level limitation can be kept for the serious bracket.
  3. I loved the idea of more HBD for the pool. It will allow you to do ad hoc stuff in synch with other communities for eg.

I have two more suggestions to look into if it makes sense,

  1. Have a long cycle of correspondence chess for people interested. I am happy to run it for the group if needed. we can keep it at 3 days a move. Prize for such can just be pride in table and some basic tokens. Don't want to keep it high prize as people might use engines etc. and it is ok in spirit of trying for best move in correspondence.
  2. Timings of the tournaments are a bit too late for Asia. I appreciate that most people might find the current timings good. Any possibility for causal players to have at different timings too, like the two titled tuesdays that happen in chess.com to accomodate timezones.

Just some thoughts. we can think of it for future.

Finally @stayoutoftherz thank you very much, and anyone directly supporting you, to make this happen. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this chess club and looking forward to future activities.

Cheers :)

Thanks! I am not so familiar with correspondence chess. In Lichess I think there is no way to run a tournament with this format. You would need to set it up all manually, for me this is too time consuming, but I add a question who would be interested in this, to get a first hint about the interest for such an event!

Maybe tournament itself might be too big a word. Basically thinking of creating a league if anyone is interested just for bragging rights. Personally interested as the longer timeframes will allow me to learn chess a bit better :) Let me work on it on the side and come back to all here with a proposal. One-one matches can always happen between club members today too, but a league style will be very interesting to follow :)

Thank you for adding the question. You are right, best to get interest first :)

Yes, I can this quite well as an ongoing thing. Whenever two players agree on a corresponding match, they could arrange this game by themselves and report the game and the outcome here in the comments (or in the Lichess team chat). I can track all the games in a separate table, I guess there won´t be that much updates per week, as the games take months. So once in a while I can post the standing in the table. But if you prefer you can do it as well, as it is your idea!

Yes I can help. but lets gauge the interest. If not enough interest I will try and first evangelize the version :)

mark me interested :-)
I just checked, one can create games in lichess without time constraints, lichess even tags them "correspondence".
have not tried it yet but willing to give the concept a go.

Wanna go for a test run? My lichess nick is hannes-stoffel there, too

Cool. Let me set up a game to check it out and we can then plan for league to start in Mar.

@hannes-stoffel you should get my challenge. Just set a casual one with 2 days limit per move. we can try it out for a few days and in parallel we can draft a call to action. I remain @brijwhiz on lichess too.

  1. Splitting the tournament would be harder to organize but this depends on the appetite of organizers. Will there be split prizes as well? This would benefit the lower rated players more and may attract more to join.

  2. Not everyone can play a lot of rounds so maybe more players with less prizes is better in my opinion.

  3. This is best decided by organizers and I agree that this is better longterm. Players tend to have a short term view and may want to keep all the prizes.

  4. Long time controls may tempt players to use chess engines so in my opinion let's stick to blitz time controls.

Thank you for organizing and I hope to join if I can wake up 😀

One question, is Berserk given in these tournaments? How is this done and how are the prizes distributed? thank you

0

avatar

Yes, everybody can berserk in those tournaments. You click on the "berserk" button before the game starts which will then cut your thinking time in half (and set the increment to 0), but you will increase your points by 50% in case you win. Only in Swiss tournaments berserking is not possible.
The prize distribution you can read in the rules which are linked in the post.

late response @stayoutoftherz

  1. this format is nice, if it is more job then other format is fine as well
  2. well even if means more reward minimum requirements of 5 round is okay for me - maybe more round will force better participation or some players can find it discouraging (some statistics in this part could help)
  3. this seems ok for me, not fan of transfer to hbd
  4. more of a short time control player - berserk when ever can so I would not find it interesting

Also this round was pure chess joy
