About Season 16

After the Lichess Team Battles and a break Season 16 will start this Friday 18rd Aug, 19h GMT (at the usual time)! It will go over 10 rounds and will be conducted in the very classical way, apart from the fact, that it is an untitled tournament. So no titled players allowed (@eniolw, @sawko, @maestroask). Why? Because frankly I found it very disappointing, that none of the strongest players in our team ever showed up to represent the team in the Lichess Team Battles, NOT A SINGLE TIME, despite I had emphasized numerous times how beneficial that would be for our team. So in this season other strong players have a great opportunity to become champion. Titled players can play along out of competition, but their results won´t be counted.

As like handled last time, if I don´t know the Hive user name belonging to your lichess name (let me know in the comments here), you can play but your result won´t be counted!

The percentage of post rewards feeding the price pool is 65% and the @badge-646464 account will be used to accrue the rewards. It is preloaded already with >120 Hive from the Lichess Team Liga posts and the fun tournament!

Again I encourage any tournament or streaming report to set @badge-646464 as 5 or 10% beneficiary, because it is the tournament who made the report possible in first place, right?

Round 1

Time Mode: 5+0 (5 minutes per game, no increment), 70 min. arena

Tournament Link: https://lichess.org/tournament/HZyqv5FP

Rules

  • All (untitled) players are welcome, also newbies, you just need a free Lichess-account and join our team in Lichess here (password is "Hive")!
  • Every Friday is one round.
  • Time mode is varying (5+0, 3+2, 2+1,...), sometimes Swiss, sometimes maybe Chess960 (Fischer Random).
  • The winner of each round gets the number of points equaling the number of players in that round, the second ranked one point less and so forth until the one on the bottom of the table who gets one point (i.e. the Lighteye-scoring). In order to be counted, at least 3 games must have been played.
  • In case two players have the same number of points, the one who played less rounds is first. If that is equal too, then the average tournament performance decides.
  • PAYOUT: The tournament points of the 10 rounds are summed up. 65% of all Hivechess-related post rewards go to the price pool (PP). The tournament winner will get 25 Hive, the runner-up 20 and the third 10 Hive bonus. The rest of the PP is divided among all players who have participated at least three times according to the number of tournament points achieved (60%) and the number of rounds played (40%).
  • There will be a special price of 10 Hive for the highest performance in relation to the own rating (counted by averaging the rating after the first and the last round, if at least 6 rounds are played).
  • Five randomly selected players that participate in at least 8 of the 10 rounds will get rewarded with 100 LEO each, sponsored by @leofinance (thanks, @anomadsoul!).
  • If I don´t know your Hive username, you won´t be considered for prices, so please let me know your Hive name in the comments! Community or badge accounts can participate but are not qualified for prices! Only individuals can get prices.

Please share this announcement among your (chess) friends and colleagues!
The more participate, the more fun! And maybe some are even interested to join Hive and it´s Chess Community?

See you all on Friday and good luck!

Interesting that there are no titled players, this means we'll probably get to see a new champion this season looking forward to participating as always.

I hate to sound rude to @stayoutoftherz who has been doing such a great job otherwise:
Personally, I consider that childish and I sincerely hope the new champion is one of their alts.

Why? This is a chess community. And in a community people should interact and engage, so that it prospers.
Why not give other players a chance?

I haven't played a single Bundesliga either, why am I allowed?

This is a Hive chess community. Speaking of community management, Spanish is the second biggest language on Hive. I understand very little of it but when I see "ajedrez", I can safely call that post Spanish as opposed to "that language". You come out rude (I assume that's inadvertent, just saying).

If better players frustrate you, ditch the prizes and distribute the earnings without chess skill involved (flat/participation/raffle). If třhey are here for the money, they surely won't play (main account or alt).

  1. There is nothing wrong with you running a private tourney instead a community tourney. You might want to rebrand it as private, though.
  2. In practice, your current attempt is insufficient. I hate giving you pointers to be successful but I just did.
  3. I would rather speak up now before scapegoating is accepted as the community value. It is probably not going to solve whatever problems you can see. Who's next? Nicknames promoting rival mindgames?

So no titled players allowed (@eniolw, @sawko, @maestroask). Why? Because frankly I found it very disappointing, that none of the strongest players in our team ever showed up to represent the team in the Lichess Team Battles, NOT A SINGLE TIME, despite I had emphasized numerous times how beneficial that would be for our team. Hi, @stayoutoftherz. I want to express you my opinion about the condition you put for the chess tournament league.

It seems valid to me that non-titled players have the right to shine too, so there can be exclusive seasons for them. However, we must remember that some players are very strong even though they don't hold titles (or we don't know if they do), so it is not clear why you are discriminating based on title.

Likewise, I don't think it is necessary or appropriate to make that comment as given in the text about titled players who did not participate in previous team tournaments. It is a comment that does not feel constructive.

Maybe the titled players (whom you also call 'the strongest') had valid reasons for not participating and you don't know them. Maybe they had other commitments or preferences or were simply unavailable. You can't assume they don't care about the team or don't want to support it.

I think it would have been better if you had announced in advance that it was necessary to participate in that league in order to compete in the next one; make this disclaimer specifically. That way, all players would have the same information and opportunity. It can be argued that it is not fair to associate the desire to organize a tournament for non-titled players with the desire to apply a retroactive penalty without prior warning.

Don't forget that although there are incentives, the community is still a community of volunteers. I think it is important to respect all players regardless of their level or degree of participation.

I can understand your frustration. And it is indeed a bit arbitrarily, I admit. I thought long about giving other players a chance to get top places, and the only other way is to split the tournaments up to 2 or more skill leagues, like Lichess does with the <1300, <1500, etc tournaments. But this is unfortunately logistically too complicated for me to handle. So why not this way? It won´t be forever. Feel free to reinstall the chessbrothersbro tournaments or create a new format, then you can set the rules as you like.
If it is "appropriate" or not, is a matter of opinion, I respect your opinion. But maybe it would have been appropriate, at least ONCE to play for the Blockchain team and not your other teams. I am also in a chess club, but I preferred to play always for the Hive team.

I can understand your frustration.

I'm not frustrated, I'm just impressed with the way the post tags some members of the community and reproaches them. I don't find it constructive.

Feel free to reinstall the chessbrothersbro tournaments or create a new format, then you can set the rules as you like.

Okay, I can do that. But that's not my point. I said your new season is fine for non-title players to have a chance. I'm just pointing out that I don't see enough justification for selling that good idea along with a desire to punish other people.

But maybe it would have been appropriate, at least ONCE to play for the Blockchain team and not your other teams.

I see. I thank you for considering me a good candidate to score a lot of points for the team. Perhaps I could have participated if someone else helped me with my work, taking on my responsibilities and plans while playing an online tournament in an online community of volunteers, that is, there was no mandatory commitment.

I don't see how you can equate the appropriateness of not participating in a league that is voluntary and had no clear prior rules or warnings about the absences of very specific people with the appropriateness of singling out some members of the community who had valid reasons for not participating and giving the impression of applying a penalty to them after the fact.

Just click on the link to the tournament (posted every Wed. or Thu.) and then press "join" on the lichess page to participate. You will then get assigned opponents (it may take some seconds). If you not make a move within 20 seconds, your game is lost.
I suggest you do some training games before the tournament.
