The State of Boxing in Summer of 2019

The biggest fights this year seem to have already happened, and we find ourselves in a period where fans are waiting for the most important fights to be made.

Canelo Alvarez seems to care more about fighting lesser competition than having a needed third match with Gennady Golovkin.

Instead Canelo will either fight Sergey Kovalev at light heavyweight, which would be a very entertaining match no doubt, or Sergey Derevyancenko, who has done nothing to deserve a title shot at this point.

While the Kovalev fight is interesting, it’s a far cry from a third fight with GGG, or unifying the middleweight division against undefeated title holders Jermall Charlo or Demetrius Andrade.

These are the fights that need to happen in the division.

Now that Manny Pacquio has a welterweight title, his next fight likely seems to be against Errol Spence.

While Manny’s win was impressive, I find it frustrating that he has been avoiding Terrence Crawford for a while now, and he gets a shot at Spence before Crawford does.

Meanwhile, Spence will be unifying with Shawn Porter, but that isn’t the fight that the fans are clamoring to see.

The heavyweight division has been thrilling to watch recently, but in this case I’m much more optimistic about the biggest fights being made.

Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are alleged to have agreed to meet again in February of 2020.

In the meantime Wilder will be re-matching Luis Ortiz, which is again a dangerous fight and perhaps too tough to take before the Fury rematch.

Anthony Joshua will likely rematch Andy Ruiz, and I don’t think it will take too long before the winner of that fight goes against the winner of Wilder vs Fury II.

It's going to take awhile for the good fights to be made, it will be interesting to see what happens.
