Put Your Hands Up - Self Defense

If you read the self defense-related posts or watch videos, sometimes you hear put your hands up. So what does it mean? Today we are going to talk about this.

A couple of days ago, I made a post about Fighting Stance. You are in a fighting stance when you fight. If you watch any fighting competition or MMA fight, you see that fighters stand in a certain way while fighting. Every martial art has its fighting stance. You will find little difference in fighting stance in different martial arts.

The basic is the same, put your hands up, there is a gap between your legs and look forward. When you spar with your training partner or train martial art, it is okay and expected that you stand in a fighting stance. Or, if you participate in a fighting competition, you will stand in a fighting stance to fight.

How about when you fight in a real-life?

When you face a challenging situation in real life, that's complicated. Sometimes you try your best to avoid the fight. Sometimes you make your first move to attack for self defense. Sometimes you do not attack the attackers even when they are being attacked.

What are you saying?

You are not attacking the attacker even when they hit you. Yup, you read that right. Sometimes you are being attacked; still, you are not doing anything to defend yourself. It does not make any sense, does it? Maybe you know what the attackers' intention. So it makes perfect sense to you what you do in a situation like this. If you are able to intercept the attackers' intention, you can protect yourself.

When you fight in real life, and you put your hands up, it does not always look like you are in a fighting stance. Sometimes it should not look like that. The moment you put your hands up with fist, it gives the obvious signal that you are ready to fight or you want to fight. But the fact is, you do not want to fight, you just want to protect yourself against the possible attack.

So you can put your hands up, and your hands should be open. You talk to the attacker and try to calm him down. At the same time, you are ready to defend yourself and counter-attack. It would be easy to make your moves if your hands are up. You can defend the punch, palm strike, elbow strike, chop, kick, or different kinds of attacks.

You can put your hands up and make the distance based on what you want to do. If you want to avoid the fight, you can get out of the punching or kicking range so that the attacker cannot reach you. However, if you decide to attack him first as a defense, you can get close to him.

If you can talk to him and avoid the fight, that's the best thing you can do. Thank you so much for reading this so far. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comment section.
