parkrun: Outpaced

I just finished a 5.041km running that lasted about 0hh:25mm:58.0ss !

I did not get to parkrun last week as I had the 10k the next day and so I missed the celebration of its 15th anniversary. I was surprised when I heard it had been going that long. Now millions of people do it around the world. Despite the wet weather I decided to get to the Letchworth event today. Cycling the 5km there was a bit cold and damp. I got up a bit late, so did not have much time to recover before the start. I almost ran with my cycle helmet on, but realised in time.

There were pacers today (in the blue vests) and I decided to try and follow the 25 minute man. I overtook him on the farm track at the start where we were dodging puddles, but then he much have checked his watch as he passed me on the hill. It was a bit slippery going up there and my legs were not feeling great. It was okay on the paths and grass. I had my trail shoes on for some extra grip as I would have been sliding about in road shoes.

By the second time on the hill the pacer was disappearing ahead. They had people running at least 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 35. I was determined the 28 guy would not catch me up. I really kept pushing all the way, but at times it felt like I was going nowhere. My phone's time may be a little off as I had issues starting it, but my official time was exactly 26 minutes. There was a good turnout and I just made it into the top quarter. I am impressed at myself as on my first parkrun early last year I was well over 33 minutes and had to walk up some of the hill. I keep saying it, but I need to get to some other runs where times are generally quicker. If I can be this fast at Letchworth I am doing okay. My next parkrun will be my 25th and it would be a nice coincidence to do it in 25 minutes.

I do not have any longer races planned, but will probably do the Greenway half marathon again next year. I am thinking of trying some others that are not too far away. I had a look and there are quite a few spread over the year.

You have uploaded 43 running activities, and 7 of them have been of similar distances (within 10 percent)!
Here are your 5-fastest running activities of a similar distance:

Over these 7 similar activities, you have travelled approximately 36.39 kms at an average pace of roughly 5:14 min/km!
Your latest run was at a pace of approximately 5.151min/km!
Looks like you went a bit faster than usual this time! Nice work!

I love the thought of this scatty guy turning up late and dashing to the start still wearing his cycle helmet!

What a great image.

Good effort for a late start, as that does add to the stress.

Intervals are what you need if you want to run faster. A fellow park runner gave me an old Runners World which outlines the 30-20-10 interval method - lots of info online. Trials have people taking 40 seconds of their 5K times after just 7 weeks!

I can be a bit scatty :) I have been doing intervals lately and they do help. My standard jogging pace has improved and I am able to sustain a fast pace for longer.

I see the two hour marathon has been achieved at last even if it took a load of pace runners to help him out. That is just a crazy pace to maintain for 2 hours.

I have only done one park run, in Oslo, and it is a great concept. I met people who are traveling around trying to do park runs starting with every letter in the alphabet. I like that kind of nerdy!

There is a browser plugin that tracks things like which letters you have covered and various other fun stats. I have been to a few different parkruns and want to go to more in my area. It is really fun to run with lots of people like this and having it be free encourages more to try it. My local run is doing a beginners class to help people get up to running 5km.

That is awesome that you were able to finish pretty close to the time you were shooting for. That is also kind of cool that they have the pacers there so you can see how you are doing and stuff like that. I wouldn't have though of that.

They have the pacers a few times each year I think, but then I am not there every week. It is really great for a free event. I keep meaning to volunteer to help out.
