Colby Covington calls Masvidal a "coward" for making excuses for a loss

Colby Covington is one of my favorite fighters because he is such an asshole. It is strange that I would say this because this is the same reason why I fell out of love with Conor McGregor. Both are great fighters and both of them have got a mouth on them that probably was instrumental in them getting big name / big money fights.

Colby goes the extra mile though, and gives unflattering nicknames to the people that he doesn't like in the MMA world

Covington already had his chance at the welterweight title back in late 2019 when he lost to Usman in a very close, and very exciting fight that saw Covington TKO'd late in the 5th round. Colby complained about an early stoppage and I can kind of identify with his protests. However, this doesn't change the fact that he was likely going to lose by split or unanimous decision anyway since he had fewer overall and "significant" strikes in the match.

The very next fight that the "Nigerian Nightmare" Usman would face would be Jorge Masvidal, who would go the distance of the full 5 rounds and lose by unanimous decision. In a somewhat related side note, the stats for that fight are almost completely missing on the UFC's official website for some reason. You would think they would stay on top of that.

Apparently, they just leaned against the fence for all rounds past round 1, I remember a very different fight than this

But I digress. There are talks about a second encounter between Usman and Masvidal being in the works for later this year and I think that Colby Covington feels a bit slighted since he is ranked higher than Masvidal in the division and it has been a longer period of time since he faced Usman. One could definitely argue that this fight, thanks to Covington's ability to spark controversy, would be a bigger draw as well.

This is probably why Covington has come back into the spotlight and talking trash about Masvidal, who Covington lovingly refers to as Street Judas. I don't even know how this nickname originates but I do find it pretty funny. After Masvidal lost to Usman, Jorge hinted at the fact that he had only 6 days to prepare for the fight and although he actually said in the same sentence that he "is not trying to make excuses for the loss" he recently has been referring to the "6 days" thing time and time again in recent interviews. Colby Covington is having none of it..

"And then Dustin Poirier says before he fights Hooker that you were in his training camp and you were training hard for that fight. So you got no excuse that you were on six days’ notice, man. Stop making excuses, man. The people see right through you, man. You’re everything you said you would never be, Jorge, and it’s sad to see, man. But I’m glad that me and the people have something in common and we can see right through you: a coward.”

Covington goes on to reference Masvidal's own Instagram page that shows a timeline of a rigorous training schedule that was going on long before the Usman / Masvidal fight took place and stating that his 6-days excuse is a load of shit.

He does kind of have a point.

For me, I don't understand what goes on behind the scenes at UFC but to bypass Covington and instead go for Masvidal to challenge Usman next doesn't make a lot of sense. Other than his loss to Usman, Covington hasn't lost a fight since 2015. He has also never faced Masvidal.

I think I can see what is happening here: Covington is trying to make a case for a Covington / Masvidal fight, and honestly, that makes a lot more sense to me than Usman / Masvidal.

Covington claims to have KO'd Masvidal in training in the past

In a really funny interview that took place a few years back, Covington had this to say about his ex-teammate Masvidal and how they will eventually fight one way or another.

"I just hope that it’s in the UFC Octagon, so he can get his medical bills paid by the UFC, and I don’t want to go to jail for assault for beating his ass.”

So will the top brass over at UFC including Dana White listen to his case? I certainly hope so because in my mind, that would have a good chance at being the fight of the year and then we could confidently put to rest any doubt about who it is that deserves to have a shot at the belt.

Hey dude nice post did you see this interview? Do you think Masvidal and Covington are faking it and friends or it's a true banter?

That would be hilarious if they actually are friends and if it is all made up, well, I suppose that wouldn't surprise me a great deal since hype seems to be just as, if not more important than actual ring performance these days. I wonder if Colby was trying to rile people up by having the Trump gear in the background during the interview.

100% correct!!! I found it very suspect all of a sudden they hate each other. Too many things in common, they both love Trump, come on now!

Check Tales From the Grind, you will understand how far it goes

Covington making his position a bit political was a turnoff for me, but I do love the tongue out taunting of his opponents. He is a beast in the octagon and his talent is undeniable, that's for sure. Masvidal I am rather indifferent towards. I feel like he was propelled to a position that he doesn't really deserve because of a lucky KO vs Ben Askgren or whatever his name was.
