Join A Group/Club
One of the most effective way to overcome depression is by joining a group. Groups are very helpful for people experiencing depression as it helps them not to feel alone that much. When you start it will become refreshing and exciting, because it is a place where you tend to forget what is actually making you depress and enjoy the moment with other members of the group/club. Groups and Clubs are very demanding, and that is what a depressed person needs at that point in their life. By demanding, I mean, they set meetings and it is mandatory you attend. It might be hard at the beginning attending their meetings, but first show an interest and then tell Chair person or President of the group what you are going through. Groups/Clubs is a lovely place, they will give you special treatment as they will offer to come to your place to grab you to their meetings. With time, you will start feeling a bit loosen to them. I will advice you join a Group/Club that you are passionate about but not familiar with members of the group. As meeting new people is also very helpful during this awful period. You have to have passion for whatever the group stands for. In other words, you have to select a group you have passion for. Like me, I like Chess and I just joined a chess group recently and it has been fun and exciting. Meeting and interacting with chess players was refreshing for me. So for you, you should think very carefully of what you have passion for and then search around your location for such Groups/Clubs. Joining a Group/Club is a very good way of overcoming depression.
Exercise is another very effective way of overcoming depression. Research studies have shown that exercise is as effective as antidepressant medications. Well, according to Dr. Michael Craig Miller, who is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School;
For some people it works as well as antidepressants, although exercise alone isn't enough for someone with severe depression. Source.
As you have seen for yourself, exercise works just as good as antidepressants. That's why sharing this article will help a lot of people from getting to the severe depression stage, where exercise might not work. Now, how does exercise help fight depression? When you are depressed your dopamine level and serotonin is low. Dopamine level is responsible for our reward system, by saying reward system I mean, it is what motivates us to do things. We humans like to do things that give us some reward, can you just imagine going to school and getting no certificate, would you go to school? definitely no. But if it is compulsory, you would go but you won't be happy or let me say you would be sad and sadness leads to depression because it would be a complete waste of your time going to school without getting any certificate[reward]. While serotonin level is responsible for your mood, such as anger, anxiety, sadness and so on. So if your dopamine and serotonin level is low, you would be depress. Amazing for us, whenever we exercise the dopamine and serotonin level in our blood increases instantly, that's why you feel a kind of happiness whenever you finish exercising. That's why those anti-depressant drugs are focused on increasing your dopamine and serotonin level. And also whenever we exercise our body releases a protein called Neurotrophic or Growth Factors, which makes our brain nerve cells grow and make new connections in our hippocampus, which helps make us feel happier, better and less depressed. According Dr. Michael Craig Miller;
In people who are depressed, neuroscientists have noticed that the hippocampus in the brain—the region that helps regulate mood—is smaller. Exercise supports nerve cell growth in the hippocampus, improving nerve cell connections, which helps relieve depression. Source.
If you are feeling depressed or know someone who is, try exercise constantly and with no long time, you will be feeling better. And also we all should try to exercise constantly as exercise also provides so many health benefits such as protecting us against heart disease and diabetes, improving our sleep, relieves us from stress, reduces our risks of Of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease and so on.
