Of Beavers and People My Actifit Report Card: January 26 2022

avatar
(Edited)

I have planned my day for today’s Final of #MAcFiT Season 5 Champions League - an @actifit tournament that I run. I won the first Season, but it had been scheduled during my summer vacations. Since then, the highest I have been able to get, was semifinals. So having won a spot in this season’s Final, I wanted to do my best to win it.

Coming to beavers shortly. I did today two lengthy walks. My morning one took me along a local river. I live in a conglomeration (a set of more or less equally sized cities located closely to one another) that is inhabited by some 2.5M people. Yet, at the outskirts where I live, there’s a place where beavers live, too.

The river has been regulated so that it doesn’t flood out if its banks. That’s the human point of view. The beavers, however, do everything to swell the river. Conflict of interests? Not here. The beavers can fall smaller trees. I have seen many signs of them doing just that. The bigger trees, however, are protected by thick rubber collars. The beavers like to dig holes in the artificial earthworks that keep the river in place. In many spots there are wooden sticks stuck into the river bottom, to prevent beavers from digging in. However, there are places where beavers can dig in and they do just that. The beavers live quite happily there. The river is clean, there's plenty of fish and no natural predators. Even though the whole length of the river there is either a footpath or a cycling path or both, the beavers have learnt that no harm comes from two-legged creatures. I like that in my area humans and beavers have found a way of peaceful cohabitation. The beavers are #AliveAndThriving here!

Due to the Final and my ambition to try to best @browery (greetings, hope you have had a great day!) I set my new personal best - 48k steps is my lifetime highest step count on a working day. I went out at 6:30, was back home by 10. Then home office work. No sooner had I finished work than I was out again, walking. I visited my longtime friends (we first met 30yrs ago!). They live 6km from my place but I found a nice “shortcut” which took 12km. Back home at 23pm…

So, well done I. #AliveAndThriving at its best. Oh, did I mention that I had managed to squeeze volunteering for local community into my long today? ;-) Okay, no more boasting. I do remember my yesterday’s update - less than 900 steps and huge chunks of time simply wasted. That’s being #alive too, isn’t it?

Today's MAcFiT update lists the winners of Pre-qualifiers for Season 6.

Great to her that you are alive, and with a healthy amount of steps @merthin, and fantastic to see the evidence that the beavers are also alive, and I hope they don't eat all tree's, enjoy your day and stay safe, awesome and alive.

It is good that beavers can coexist peacefully with humans, I have always said that before man there were animals, therefore, their environment and coexistence should be respected.

people go to either of two extremes:

  • don't care at and exploit the Earth
  • bend to eco-terror which mandates that trucks go thru city center, 'cause building a ring will harm some unique frog

This is why I like so much the local authorities solved the dilemma. If beavers were given total freedom, they would flood nearby houses and roads. If humans were not to care, we would lose a precious place for rest and outdoor activities.

The park is partially a typical city park - with gravel paths, ice cream, benches, fountain etc. But its part that touches the river, is left to nature (well, not entirely - there's some maintenance of the river banks (earthworks) and if trees pose danger to people on foot or cycling path, the trees are removed.

Those pictures look great. Haven't seen beavers in real life for quite a very long time. They're not really common around here.
And wow! You are really walking to stay #alive! Keep up the great work!

Cheers,

it's surprising - they need clean (but not crystal clear!) water and typically shy away from people. The area where I live, is the north-eastern "corner" of a cluster of cities packed with heavy industry (coal mining, steel works etc). Yet careful restoration and keeping balance between nature and people are possible. My city takes drinking water from below where the beavers live.

Oh I see. That is interesting - and it is great that you take so much care about the nature around you!

I have to say - as a Nation, we don't, we are more on the exploiting side. But I want to applaud my local municipal / regional authorities for concerted efforts aimed at restoring nature destroyed by hundreds of years of mining and pollution from heavy industry

That's been a really cool hike. I'm curious about #MAcFiT, tell us more how to participate?

it's based on @actifit reports. There's elite Champions League and a Consolation Cup. All together - 32 players compete with their step counts on given Match Days. All they need to do, is to publish their @actifit report. I do all the number crunching.

The current Season 5 ends today. This coming weekend we start Eliminations to Season 6. You are a bit late to join now, so please subscribe to @C/MAcFiT community and watch how it goes. Season 6 will end mid March and then qualifiers to the new season will start.

It's interesting, I just joined. I will take a look. I'm a great walker but I don't know if I can handle those 50,000 steps.

well, 50k was for the Final. In the group phase I averaged 27k per matchday (and I won the group). In the play-offs, I did ~20k, ~30k (QFs) and ~40k, 35k (SF).

The whole idea is that you don't have to be a walking titan. The competition is played on selected Match Days and many players, myself included, simply aim at the important games (imagine that the day before my 49k, I did... 880 steps)

What prevented you making 50k steps!!

Anyway, good luck for the match.

How to join the tournament?

Quite interesting and funny statement here:

They live 6km from my place but I found a nice “shortcut” which took 12km.

well, I could have walked around my flat for 15 minutes :-)

@C/MAcFiT Season 5 ends today and Eliminations for Season 6 kick off tomorrow. If you have the patience to until mid-March, you are welcome to join the 7th edition.

There are 32 slots in two tournaments, elite Champions League and second division Consolation Cup. Players get ranking points, which determine whether they got free admission or seeded slot in Eliminations. Players with low / no rank have a chance to join by playing in pre-qualifiers. Alas, they have ended last Monday.

@merthin, thats a lot of steps in a day.
Beavers and human now live together in peace. That's excellent news. i hope humans living with humans can do that too.
Anyways, congrats on accomplishing 48000+ steps in one day.
i hope you had good time meeting your old friend. That must have brought lots of old memories ( more good than bad)

I'll pass your entrance to the finals of MAcFiT Season 5 Champions League (although my congratulations), and your amazing personal record of 48K steps made in a single day (on which, I envy you a lot 😉), to jump right into the short beavers' story you brought to us, as it impressed me the most, particularly because of its very well created and managed cohabitant part with humans.

It's so good to hear that somewhere in the world (no matter where) someone was wise enough to create the conditions in which nature and the human way of life may coexist so well. That's not only #aliveandthriving but, from my point of view, even alive and empowering (maybe this is going to be new Alive tag - #aliveandempowering 😉) many could learn from.

Nonetheless, I like the photos you managed to take along your walking path! 🙂

thank you @ana-maria and you are absolutely right. Winning a nondescript tournament means nothing (although doing something extraordinary like doing 49k steps on working day - while my long term average is just about 20k - does matter to me). You've captured the important thing. Look at the satellite view:

image.png

The pin denotes the place where I spotted traces of beavers activity. South to it you see a green area - it's a city park (photo with a wooden beaver sculpture in my original post). The lakes to the north-east are artificial. Sand had been extracted to replace depleted coal in nearby mines (now closed) and the pits had been flooded. To the east, you will see a huge steelworks complex (far right-hand side of the photo, between S1 and 94 roads). If you look west - there's a coal-powered electro-plant. Look south and you see densely populated area. You would think - the is the last of places where beavers would live. Yet, wise re-cultivation and management made it possible. True, the beavers cannot do as they please - bigger trees are protected, wooden sticks in the river bottom prevent them from digging holes in places where it would have posed danger to nearby neighborhood. But within the limits, they do well. And we, humans, can enjoy "green lungs" of otherwise industrial (or post-industrial, as some mines/plants have been shut down) area.

Now, you really caught me with your reply! 😃
I was intrigued enough to go and search for it on the map. By the names shown on the screenshot map that you posted here, I thought it might be somewhere in Poland, but I wasn't sure. Now I am! 🙂 It's quite close to Katowice.

Apart from this whole beavers' story (although, it might sound strange, but I have to tell you), I am amazed how you (the Polish people) managed to get organized, accomplished fast growth and development of the whole country, hugely raised the standard (of almost every average Joe) once the iron curtain was finally pulled off and the old communist clique replaced with "fresh" people in the lead with an entirely different mindset that the ones in the previous regime.
You wouldn't believe how often we talk and discuss it at home!

Therefore, your beavers' story makes even more sense and it's a perfect fit for the whole picture! 😃

well, not everything is as bright as you imagine, but yes, we have made a huge leap between getting rid of the communist regime and now. The country of my childhood (pre 1989) is completely different from the country I live in now.

Yeah, I can understand that there are always some weeds among the wheat (as we would like to say in my country), and accordingly lots of room for improvement, but I was talking more about the overall picture.
However, I hope that the completely different country you are currently living in means different in a good way!?! 🙂
