dannewton just finished a 5.35km walk, that lasted for 78 minutes.
This walk helped dannewton burn 421.0 calories.

Description from Strava:
Hey. So if you maybe noticed I've not done any running this week, then you'd be right. A flippin' injury has appeared from pretty much nowhere.

And I really do mean 'from nowhere'.

Let start at the beginning. I finished my Race nearly 4 weeks ago. It was 27 miles of sand and I was definitely suffering. I was tired, my legs felt lifeless, and I had aches and pains all over the place. Gradually though, over the next 2 weeks all that slowly disappeared. In my last week I managed two 6 mile runs completely pain free.

I then did the 9 mile run last weekend and I felt fine for almost all of that, except for the last mile. In the end of that mile I noticed a slight pain in my right calf, which has confused the hell out of me as in the preceding 4 weeks I have had ZERO problems or pain or any sort of discomfort in my calf.

I just thought it was a bit stiff due to the 'longer' run, but then on Sunday when I tried to walk up the stairs to the bedroom it suddenly felt REALLY painful. I wasn't able to push off it properly (ie if I stand on my right leg and try to extend onto tiptoes... I could barely do it). I could still walk ok, but any time I need to push off that foot was painful which basically rules out any active sport stuff.

Mondays walk

On Monday, I just went for a walk as I needed to get outside after being sat at the desk all day. I pretty much sulked the whole way round as I wasn't able to do what I wanted. Other than that outing, I've spent the rest of the week resting as much as I can, and hope that it settles down.

It is really annoying, as it only hurts if I do a certain movement. Sat down in the chair, it feels fine. Walking around the house, and walking a short way up the road to catch the bus, it feels completly normal.

Crossing the road quickly in a gap in the traffic with 4 steps of running however, and the pain appears again.

I've already had a telling off from @nickydee telling me to go see a physio straight away and get it looked at...and I dunno, it doesn't seem important enough to bother them? In the past if anything stopped working I just rested and waited for it to heal. This time round I haven't got that patience anymore, and I'm desperate to get back out there and get back into running.

the benefit of exercise isn't just the physical fitness, but it helps me to keep on top of other healthy habits. When I run regularly I eat better, I sleep better, I feel generally happier, and much more focused too. All of that has gone out of the window in the past week

I need to get this sorted ASAP!

I have found a local physio:

...and one of their treatment centers is a 20 minute walk from work so its easy to get to. The cost of £42 for that initial consultation was a shock, but I guess you pay for the wealth of knowledge/experience on offer. I have no idea how to solve this other than rest. And I think I need to found out:

  1. is this just a muscle sprain/strain or something potentially worse?
  2. are there exercises I can do can to speed up the recovery?
  3. most importantly, when can I start running again?!

I'm going to see how the weekend goes, and if in the next 3 days there is no noticeable improvement, then I think I will see if I can book an appointment for next week.

In the mean time, I'm gonna do my best not to just sit around and sulk (and eat everything in sight)

No good reading about your injury. Hopefully it is nothing major and gets better soon, I know all about the frustration of not being able to run. My ankle has taught me to focus on what I can do. Walking, cycling, core and body weight strength workouts. None of which are as good as running for me but have definitely helped fill the hole.

Thanks Brad, I really hope I can get it sorted soon. Have had 7 days of rest, and it hasn't got worse, but it hasn't got better either. Will be going to a physio sometime this week for a more informed opinion...

er yes, I'm currently filling the hole with snacks and biscuits, I need to find a better alternative!

Boo! That sucks. Back with a proper response soon. I'm... sick of the screen for today but didn't want to miss your post. I can't believe it's been FOUR weeks since your race already?! Where have I been???

Hello stranger, it has been awhile lol. And yes can't believe its already been 4 weeks... crazy how quick time goes when you don't pay attention!

I've seen some posts of yours mention a lack of motivation with Hive, it can be hard to keep on top of all the blogging and interacting, and sometimes we need to take a step back. I know that other than the 'running' posts, my own blogging/commenting has been very hit and miss recently.

Boo! That sucks.

er yep it really does! trying really hard not to let everything fall apart at the seams in a "well if I can't run, then why bother doing anything else" frame of mind.

Hello! I'm back. There's definitely something to the easy linking of good habits together (and bad to each other!)

Sometimes when I'm feeling rubbish (like from the middle part of today onwards because I woke at about 3 am and didn't really get back to sleep) I ask myself, What would make me feel better?" I really didn't feel like making anything decent for lunch, but I knew if I ate something really easy (but crap, i.e. not nutritious at all) then I'd feel worse. So I asked myself "What's the easiest thing I could make that would also be healthier?" and then I made that. I felt better about myself and my actions and that then leads to better actions again (like logging onto Hive and replying to comments instead of zoning out and staring at some stupid movie or similiar).

Injuries: like Brad said, his ankle has been giving him grief and he's barely run in months. He's coped well, most of the time. But he keeps looking for what he can do and does that. That's kept him afloat emotionally for sure. AND we've been on the lookout for awesome people who know more than the experts we've tried over the years with body issues. We are currently loving this guy. If you search on his channel for "injury" or "injuries" it should bring up one or more really useful videos you could try, for free, before booking in with that physio.

Definitely is! I just wish I could notice those easy habits earlier on instead after the mistakes have been made. There's a great book Atomic Habits by James Clear, which talks about making tiny changes day to day, and that over time those tiny changes compound to create much bigger successes.

perhaps I need to dig that book out again, make the use of the downtime from lack of physical training to work on mental training instead?

But he keeps looking for what he can do and does that.

That was a much needed reminder, thank you.

I went for a walk earlier today, and once I had accepted the current reality "that I'm not running at the moment", the walk became much more enjoyable and much, much more positive

Sawry. Didn't mean to nag and tell ya off 🤓

I did though and I don't care 😏

Just take care of yourself. It's also 'cause I know you run a lot and suspected you may run on it anyway. See?

Hope it heals soon. Keep us updated. 🌼
