dannewton just finished a 5.34km walk, that lasted for 72 minutes.
This walk helped dannewton burn 472.0 calories.

Description from Strava:
I guess I'll begin with the important stuff. Calf strain injury still here. Well technically I don't know what it is, but Dr Google informs me that the symptoms are mostly due to a calf strain/tear. The fact I can still walk on it reasonably comfortably tells me that it is on the mild side, but an injury is still an injury.

It is slowly, very slowly, improving but I'm still gonna have a physio appointment in 2 weeks for a more expert opinion. Until then, I'll be picking and choosing when and where I walk and carefully stretching to keep it mobile. I don't want to do too much, but I also think that not doing anything at all and just resting is not the answer either.

I have been going for walks, and I decided to go for a walk today.

Its been a busy few days so I haven't been out as often as I wanted, but today I was able to finish work slightly earlier than normal and I figured I could walk home from work

My 'commute' to work is in 2 steps. A bus from home to town, and then town to the office. And then vice versa on the way home.

After work I got the bus down to town, and then I walked the 5km home. It was quite nice actually in the sun, and I took my time as there is no need to rush lol. It also included a long walk up a hill, which I took slowly as there was a chance it could aggravate the calf injury. Once I got to the top of the hill I could feel my calf getting 'tight' but it didn't hurt in the same way it had a couple of weeks ago

...thats a plus I guess!

I shall take it easy for the rest of the evening, and I'll be at home all day tomorrow, so there will more resting... and then I'll go out for a long-ish walk on Saturday (I'll probably play PokémonGO at the same time)

Are you able to do any strength work. I found as I got older I have to continuely do calf raises, squats and as many single leg body weight exercises to keep things in order and support my running. Will be interesting to see what the physio says.

Are you able to do any strength work.

Not sure at the moment, I'm just keeping it moving and careful stretching. I've tried calf raises, and there is a small amount of pain, but I can't work out if the pain is good (strengthening the body) or bad (affecting the injury and preventing recovery)

I think I will need to look at some actual strength/conditioning exercises for the future, as I don't particularly want this again!

Hopefully the physio will be able to advise further...

Sorry to hear it's still bothering you :(

Such a hassle being immobilized in any way. Especially if you're an active human.

I know nothing about muscles and physio so, luckily for you, I can't send tons of opinionated opinions.

Just hope you get up and running again soon. 🌼

Sending warmth on a more chilly weekend down south. Winter is om its way 😬

Hey. Its getting better though (I think I might be able to glimpse light at the end of the tunnel...)

Reading round the subject, I have realised that the injury likely occured due to a general lack of strength. This was fine 20 years ago, but now I am approaching my forties, my body is not doing as well lol. Simple enough to solve, I just need to fit some general conditioning exercises into my training. Squats, press-ups, core stuff etc.

I tried my first strength session today, and promptly overdid it

no surprises there!

But although walking up stairs was a struggle afterwards, it is mostly just tired and over worked muscles. Good news is that I did 4 different leg exercises, and I didn't feel any of the pain of my original injury in the calf. So that is a win at least. Some more exercise sessions and the physi next week and I might be able to give a 'little' run a go. And obviously this time I need to keep the strength training up alongside it

Thank you for sending the warmth, we have had a very cold Spring so far... today the Sun actually came out so evidently it was the kickstart we needed to get our Summer underway!

Yep!

I hate to say it not really, but "I told you so!" 😉

The physio will give you a proper program that will strengthen relevant muscles and regenerate the calf.

They're really good with recovery stuff now. 👍🏻

I had back trouble once, for example, and the physio actually gave me upper leg exercises to do to strengthen my back. Seems weird, but also nit when everything is connected. It worked pretty fast!

I'm glad you're going.

I'd honestly suggest you wait rather. In case you do more damage accidentally. 😬

Wish I could afford one! It's on the list!

I thought you might somehow! 🤣

I am being mostly sensible with this. And to be fair any exercises I picked would be too much as my physical strength has been neglected for ages.

Half the exercise (press-ups, crunches) won't hurt my calf. The other leg based exercises I was very careful and if I felt even the slightest 'sharp pain' I would have stopped immediately)

I'm still not gonna attempt running until its checked out next week, don't worry! 😉

Wow, you're clever :D

Okay. Now I just feel guilty about how lazy I am :/

not really as 'clever' would have avoided the injury in the first place! 🤣

There may be many words to describe you Nicky, but 'lazy' is not one of them

Oh boy... you blaming yourself for getting hurt? 🤔

You ran a marathon. First one. And it was unexpectedly half on sand so... you should sue 'em 😈

Aren't you in the States? I hear people sue for anything over there! :D

Ah... thanks, Dan. Not lazy in some areas. That's true. But about starting proper physical training again, I've been a bit slack. Or resistant, should we call it.

If we took half of your motivation and half of my lack of it, we'd probably find a happy balance 😅
