Lessons from Watching Football: How Our Intuition Can Lead Us Astray

Just over a week ago on Sunday the 21 of August it was one of the matches from Match Day 5 of the premier league. It was Newcastle vs Manchester City. I'm a football fan, I watch a lot of football during the weekends and I mostly watch these matches at viewing centers. I don't know if you have them in your country so I'll add the description that viewing centers are just small halls with TVs where people go to watch football matches for a small fee.

So during that Newcastle match I was at one of these viewing centers. In the 5th minute, Man City scored the first goal of the match

and immediately I started hearing people say Man City was going to murder this guys today since it didn't take them any time to score the first goal.

Then in the 28th minute, Newcastle scored, making it 1-1.

By the time it was the 54th minute Newcastle were comfortably leading 3-1.

At that point some man who wasn't at the viewing center from the start came in and even though he saw Man City losing he saw they were trying really hard and getting quite close so he told everyone that Man City was surely going to score more goals in the match.

And soon enough at the 60th minute, Man City scored.

He turned to everyone and started screaming "what did I say? Didn't I tell you Man City would score more goals?" He kept bragging about having good judgement, then some other guy told him Man City would end up not winning the match, though, to which he replied that Man City would win! They argued back and forth until they decided to wager some money.

Almost immediately, in the 64th minute Man City scored again, making the scores 3-3.

This guy got even louder and started screaming about having the best judgement ever and irritated that anyone even dared disagree with him. "When I came in was it not 3-1? Didn't I say Man City would still score more goals? Immediately I said so didn't they score? Why then did you people disagree when I said they will win the match? Did my previous correct prediction not show you that my words are not to be disrespected?"

He went on and on and said Man City would win the match and score even up to 5 goals. It's important to note that this guy wasn't joking, he was extra solemn and speaking with so much aggression. Football fans can really take the game to heart sometimes 😅.

So, what happened next? The match ended 3-3

and that loud mouthed man lost all his bragging rights including the money he wagered.

Now Comes the Lesson...

You cannot look at a set of events/occurrences without getting a feeling of what may occur next sometimes. This feeling or intuition can be very powerful sometimes that one can blindly follow it and even stake a lot on the outcome they feel would come next.

We blindly follow our intuition mostly when we feel them really strongly and also due to the fact (and this is my big reveal) that most of us are ignorant of the fact that what we feel from our intuition is based on the facts we are witnessing and have witnessed in the past rather than based on some power of prediction deep inside us.

That is, many people when they feel their intuition telling them something they look at it like it is somewhat spiritual, like it is their inner power or inner guardian angel or something telling them this thing and that it is all a matter of trust when it comes to whether they should follow it or not. They don't realize that it is simply a judgement arrived at based on the what you're currently seeing and what you've seen in the past.

For example, look at the story above. Why did that guy feel strongly that Man City would score? If you ask him, like most of us, he'll say it is a feeling based on good judgement and prediction abilities inside him. People even consider this quite spiritual. He wouldn't know that it is simply because he saw Man City trying so hard and coming really close. He wouldn't know it's also simply because Man City has proven to be a good goal scoring side in the past so now seeing them trying so hard and coming so close it is easy to adjudge that success is very likely and almost certain.

And when they scored 2 goals making it 3-3 to prove this feeling his confidence skyrocketed! The events now showed more success so even more success is to be expected and that's why this guy started saying Man City would score up to 5 goals and win the match.

But Real Life Doesn't Work Like That..

Since our intuition bases it's judgement on what has happened and what is happening at the moment it stands a good chance because what has happened and what is happening can, a lot of times, show what would happen next. This is also one reason people trust their intuitions so much without realizing that a great lot of times too what has happened and what is happening can have absolutely nothing to do with what would happen next. What would happen next can turn out to be completely and radically different from what has happened or is happening.

Watching football at viewing centy has shown me this one billion times. So many times I have seen guys give their predictions based on current happenings in the match with so much confidence and I'll see the reasons why they're so confident because I'm watching the same match, but at the end of the day it wouldn't come to pass.

I've also seen it come to pass a lot of times and these guys immediately start bragging about their good judgement and asking people why they don't respect their words more, forgetting all the times they've gotten it wrong 😂.

Even I myself, one time in the first 20 minutes of a Manchester United match it was 1-1 and I immediately staked some money on an online betting platform that there would be more than 2 goals in the match. I felt really strongly that I'll win because as you can see that was 2 goals in such a short time already, it makes you feel there would be more. But guess what? The match ended 1-1 🤣.

Conclusion

As I've stated, know the reasons why you're getting the feelings/intuitions you're getting, know that they're nothing but judgements your mind is coming up with based on what happened and what is happening. There's a good chance it is right about what comes next, there's also an equally good chance it is wrong by a mile.

Following or deciding not to follow is all up to you but the most important thing is that you know where these feelings come from and not think they're a spiritual revelation.

Do I need to say much about how important it is to note this when it comes to cryptocurrency trading? Or any sort of trading or forecasting? A lot of past and current events make one feel strongly about what would happen next in the markets sometimes. Now you know how to really view these feelings.

👍

PS: And since I'm talking about predictions, yo @vcelier, dyou remember when last year during the bulls you told me you don't think Bitcoin would go to 20k again? Yet that happened before 1 year even elapsed 😂.
