If you work in a law enforcement agency or in private security, you have to learn self defense and how to handle different violence situation. Then learning self defense becomes a part of your job. You usually face a situation where you have to fight or defend someone's life. For your own security, you should learn some advanced techniques.

We usually talk about martial arts. You can learn martial arts to be a fighter in order to participate in the fighting competition like UFC, MMA. That's sports. If you want to focus on the sports version of martial arts, you are trained on how to win a match. If you are passionate about that, you are welcome. You can move on to that direction.

However, if your goal is not to participate in the fighting competition, you just want to learn self defense and how you can defend yourself in real life situation. Your training would be a little different. That's why before learning martial arts, ask yourself what you really want to learn martial arts.

If you are clear about what you really want learning martial arts, it will help you choose martial arts. Yes, you read that right. Some martial arts focus on sports such as boxing, karate, Taekwondo and so on. Some martial arts focus on self defense and how you can face different situation and get out of there. For example, Wing Chun, Krav Maga.

There are some situations where you have to stop the violence and catch the attacker. If there are multiple attackers, you have to face them as well.
