Evening Hike around Dalbeattie Loch

Description from Strava: So it's now Day 5 of the holiday to Scotland (or is it day 6? Losing track of days now haha!)

Yesterday was a very busy day exploring different parts of Galloway Forest. Lots of little walks, lots of stuff to see, bur ended on a slightly sour note as the paths mentioned in the trail leaflet weren't sign posted, and so we wandered randomly instead the correct walks.

Today was an easier day, we spent the morning sifting through and photographing the moths we caught last night, and then we visited a Red Kite feeding station in the afternoon.

the Red Kite is a large bird of prey, which almost became extinct in the UK in the 1960's. Due to a crack down on poaching, along with some designated places which provide food for the birds, the species is increasing again

It's a good place to photograph these magnificent birds, and we spent a pleasant couple of hours watching as over 100 birds arrived to feed.

If you look at the image above, you can see a picture showing just how many Red Kites there were, truly a sight to behold!

Later on (after taking 600 photos, more on that to follow later) I decided I needed to stretch my legs, and so I headed back up to Dalbeattie Town Forest. I chose a different route to last time, a path which looped around the local Loch. A decent workout up and down some steep and rocky terrain, but still an enjoyable route.

We have just two more days here before heading home, the time is flying past!

Wow, that's a lot of kites. I sometimes see 2 or 3 around here. They are spectacular birds.
