My Somewhat Controversial Thoughts on Aerobics

We all know what aerobics are, right? This is a good summary from Google AI:

Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic cardio movements with stretching and strength training, set to music to improve all elements of fitness, including endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Typically performed in 30–60 minute sessions, it raises your heart rate and oxygen intake, utilizing large muscle groups.

Aerobics are the major things a lot of people do for fitness, theh gather in groups and do em, usually to music with a coach in front of them showing them the moves while they follow. It is really popular and that's more reason why my controversial take on it should be aired.

Don't Do Aerobics

First of all, I'll say I'm happy for anyone who does even the slightest thing in the gym or for fitness, that's a good thing and humans need a lot more activity than we're already doing in today's world, so I'm glad you did something, it is way better than the majority of people.

Secondly, if that is all you can do due to health reasons, then great.

But there's no reason why any able-bodied person should be doing aerobics. Your fitness journey should be all about building muscles, and aerobics suck at building muscles.

First of all Why Should Your Fitness Journey be about Building Muscle?

Because having muscles is a life hack and it takes care of too many health problems you have. It helps your body regulate sugar and fats, the more muscles you have the more sugar and fats your body burns. And you know sugar and fats lead to a lot of health problems.

It makes you stronger, makes you look better (although women shouldn't build upper body muscles if they plan to keep the utmost femininity), strengthens your immune system, makes you sleep better (and better sleep is about the most important thing dor your health because sleep helps you repair damages in your body and refreshes you all round), etc.

How Bad Aerobics are at Building Muscles

This is a case that makes itself. Aerobics cannot compare to weight lifting for muscle building, moving around in rhythm can't compare to lifting weights to failure, and muscle building should be your goal, that's why you should ditch them for weightlifting. The cardiovascular benefits of weightlifting is also enough for you, and if not some aerobics can help but they should be secondary to weightlifting.

Conclusion

It's easy to say "just do both" because I'm not saying anything is really wrong with aerobics, I'm just saying weightlifting is a better option, but there's a danger with saying just do both. Working out takes time, energy, effort, motivation, money, etc. So when you get to pay all these prices to workout you really have to make it count and doing workouts that don't really cut it should be avoided.

So it's best to focus on the important one while making the less important one even less of a priority because you can hardly do enough of the important one.
