A surprisingly good run after quite a long break from cardio

This summer I have been neglecting my cardio. I have still been exercising but focusing almost entirely on weights because of the intense heat that we have been having this summer. I say this every summer. It's not like this particular summer has been more brutal than others, it is just always like this.

Usually after a long break from doing a run I expect to do just terribly but I was actually quite happy with a number of things that happened during this longer than expected run of mine that I did yesterday.

Almost none of my runs have any sort of elevation change to them because I live in a city that is next to a giant lake and there are no hills here. I don't know if it is was like this hundreds of years ago when Chicago was founded, but whatever the case is, there are basically nothing but straight flats everywhere in this city.

It was still brutally hot yesterday but I waited until after sundown and there was a wind coming off the lake so I decided to just go ahead and get it done. I wasn't expecting much but a combination of me being stubborn and the fact that I was checking out Depeche Mode's new album for the first time lead to me doing much better than I thought I was going to do.

I didn't set out with any particular distance or pace in mind but just that I was going to go for at least a half an hour.

You can tell by looking at my splits that there was a little bit of cheating taking place on km number 7. I don't think I am capable of running 1000 meters in 2.5 minutes even if I am only doing one, let alone at the end of a run when I am pretty tired.

For all but a few of these km's I was walking after jogging for as long as I was comfortable doing so. This is normally how I roll. When I get out there to run I don't try to not ever stop although I know that this would likely be better for me if I did.

You see, my objective whenever I do any exercise is to not end up hating it. Therefore when I feel like walking, I walk. Some times in the past when I have done these runs I lose interest in running quickly and will end up walking almost all of it. The way I look at it, this is still better than sitting at home watching TV. I did still end up sitting on the sofa quite a lot later that night but I no longer felt guilty about it.

At the moment I intend to go and do it again today although I am a little sore in my legs from having not gone on any runs in a month or so.

Stay focused brothers and sisters!

This seems very wise to me:

You see, my objective whenever I do any exercise is to not end up hating it. Therefore when I feel like walking, I walk.

yeah buddy. If we hate the exercise that we are doing we are not going to want to do it. For a lot of people the results are the only thing that matters and they punish themselves to get that way. For normal people though, this is impractical.

It's always good to be happy with your performance. I'm quite glad that we don't really get extremes of temperature here. Mind you, it's been hot for the time of year, but is turning cooler and damper now. I can mostly run all year. There are not too many hills around here, but I make use of what there is for my training.

yeah the terrain here is entirely flat unless you count the stairwells. I run year round as well but I know for a fact you are far more dedicated to it than I am.

After todays run things should get a little easier and the soreness will magically disappear. This is a good effort and kind of gets me thinking I should be doing something similar. It is easy once you start.

well i wouldn't say it is easy, but with tools like Strava at least you can track your process easily. I don't like carrying my phone with me but unless I want to buy a $300 watch I kind of have to.
