Description from Strava:
I had not run since Monday as I was saving myself for Winter Run. Yesterday I did double duty at parkrun with the pre-race briefing and timekeeping. It was a bit muddy, but the sun came out so it was not too cold.

Winter Run is a 10k race around the City of London in support of Cancer Research. I think last year there were around 14,000 runners. It is by far the biggest event I have done. When I checked the trains yesterday there seemed to be a replacement bus from my stop, so I got a lift to Hitchin so that I would not have to be up quite so early. I saw a fair few people who were heading to the race as they all had the same bag that was mandatory for checking in. I met up with some work colleagues at Charing Cross. We had two Brits and two Frenchmen running plus a Polish lady supporting us, along with her cute dog.

Doggie

We had to drop our bags off first and that was all well organised. You can see that Admiralty Arch is covered in scaffolding. The start was around the corner near Trafalgar Square. We had to go around the square and then along in front of the National Gallery. People were allocated to 'waves' to space them out, but we all went together. There was a big crowd waiting to set off. Just before this we had some rain, but it did not last for long.

Trafalgar Square

The course winds around various streets in the old part of the city with some interesting buildings. We passed St Paul's Cathedral, the Guildhall and the Royal Courts of Justice. It was not too up and down, but I was feeling every climb, especially near the end. We kept together and the younger guys may have helped me go a little quicker. With so many runners we were having to dodge around others all the time.

There was a festival atmosphere with steel bands, drummers and choirs along the way as well as people dressed at wolves, penguins, snowmen and yetis to match the theme. I saw people making their way around on crutches or a stick, so I felt I had it easy in comparison.

The last couple of kilometres were hard work, but I pushed through to the end in Whitehall. I was happy enough with my time. My sore hip had not played up too much, but I could feel it afterwards. I think resting in the week before helped.

Finishers

At the finish we got our medals and there were some refreshments being given out too. I needed something after all that. The Hive logo got displayed around London.

In Mhe Mall

Afterwards we posed for some photos on The Mall with Buckingham Palace in the distance. Then we went off to find a pub for a celebratory pint.

Beer time

Getting home was fine. I walked up to Tottenham Court Road Tube station. Next to that is a video installation that is impressive.

Video wall

It was a long morning outing, but very enjoyable. I may do some other big runs, but still do not feel ready for a marathon.

Run free!

14,000 runners

Blimey thats a lot of people in a comparatively small area! Would need a huge amount of organization to manage the crowds and make everything work smoothly.

Looks like you had a great day out, and had a well deserved !BEER afterwards

I've just seen that there were almost 18,000 finishers! The organisation was really good.

Hope your legs are okay today.

Blimey! A stark contrast to my race, which had just 40 starters! 🤣

Yes all god thanks, felt a little stiff this morning, but a short walk helped... will try a little walk/run tomorrow afternoon and see how it goes

Must be a big job closing roads to traffic in London. Great you could keep it under an hour in a large crowd, Great to see the Hive shirt out and about.

There are quite a few races in London, so they have the experience. It all went very smoothly. A fun event for all types of runner.

Whichever two are together in this way, it feels very good to run.

That's awesome man. I do love these sorts of events although I haven't participated in one in quite some time. The feeling of community that you feel with like-minded people pushes you even harder and I know that I never give up on these things... the motivation that you get from others when you are struggling is HUGE and I've made tons of friends at these sorts of events.

That looks like a wonderful run. I love the inner zones of London to walk about. Always enjoyed myself there, especially along the Thames from Big Eye towards Tate Modern and beyond.

I slipped off my walking and running thanks to some work pressures and associated stresses. Need to get back on again.

Who are those people in silver on stilts? Are they some winter king or queen or were they actually participants?

Unfortunately we didn't run by the river, but it was still nice.

There were lots of winter themed characters around. I think those on stilts were just to welcome the athletes, but some runners were in fancy dress.

What do you eat or drink before such a run? Do you have anything while running?

I had some cereal and a banana that morning. We had some small snacks afterwards and then a beer! I had lunch when I got home. For a 10k you shouldn't need anything along the way. I've never had any of the gel packs that some runners use. Some sugary sweets may be as good to get an energy boost. Some people had the packpacks with a water supply, but I was hydrated enough. On a really hot day you would need more. They gave out drinks and cereal bars at the finish.
